Finally got my dual 1 chamber Flowmasters installed -pics

Here's some pics of my system I had a local muffler shop create for me. I had them replace the 2.5" intermediate pipe with a 3", split it into 2 2.5" pipes after the axle and mount two 2.5" one chamber racing flowmasters on each pipe. I haven't got any tips yet because I think the right one will be off center because it had to be mounted a little further in due to the spare tire slot.

3" Intermediate pipe $65
Custom installation $100
2 1-Chamber racing Flowmasters $150

No, the right one is not on backwards (notice the red inlet sticker), it was labeled wrong when it arrived here from Summit.

I'll probably cook the heck out of my rear carpet.

maybe let the mufflers hang down a little lower so you can straighten them out.

How does it SOUND?? You gotta make sound files or videos!! I think I woulda lowered it some, straightened them out and then ran pipes with tips past the bumper. I wonder how that is for flow??

Will you pass emmisions??

As far as the emissions question... this shouldn't affect the emissions, but as far as the visual inspection goes, I haven't had a problem yet on other vehicles I've owned with 1 chamber Flows, but then again, for some reason, they weren't nearly as loud as this one is. I had a '92 Chevy 350 4x4 with a 3" 1-chamber Flow just under the cab and then cut off there and it wasn't half as loud as this is. I have read that the 1-chamber Flows are for off-road use only, so I guess if the inspector knows that, it could be a problem. We have no sniffer test here, so I don't know any other reason it would fail. I will work on some sound files when I figure out how to make decent ones. I think I might either try to get it lowered an inch or two (because it looks like the right one might be a little high on my bumper) or go with some sort of turndown. I wanted chrome tips, but didn't want them to be off-center, so I just told them to leave it until I found something I liked. I'm open for suggestions here. It is LOUD, really loud. It does not actually exit past the bumper, so I think I may be getting a lot of resonation coming through the cargo area. I didn't think I would ever say this, but it might be too loud, yet I think that might be due to the resonation I described. It really sounds a lot like a truck my brother had. It was a TBI 350, long tubes, trick flow heads, true duals, etc. He had the headers run directly into a pair of 2 chamber Flowmasters and directly durn down (only about 18" or so of total exhaust) and had been mistaken more than once for a big block. This doesn't drone quite as loud as his did and due to the full length exhaust system I have, it is a little more mellow than his. It isn't quite as 'raspy' either. I only have a wore out 305 TPI with 130K miles on it, stock manifolds for now, wore out injectors and probably everything else, too. I'm sure a 350 would give it a better sound. I'll have to give it a couple of weeks to see how it settles with me. I have had the crossflow style Flowmaster on a 350 Z-28 before and I liked that too, but I was going for something a little more aggressive and unique. I also liked the 1-chamber sound and was just curious as to what something like this would sound like and am impressed so far. I kind of liked the turndowns at a 45* angle someone had posted here a camaro that had true duals so I'm leaning towards something like that.

Yeah, I think some kind of tail pipe is a good idea but it looks nice and ought to sound awesome .

Wow that is exactly how my friend has his setup on his 96 Z28. The only difference is that he has his mufflers tilting the other way. How does it sound? His is pretty quiet at idle but when hes cruising by you'll turn your head to see whats coming.

I just went to my local muffler shop and explained to them my idea and asked if it could be done and he said 'sure, no prob'. I asked what they wanted for a 3" intermediate pipe and they wanted $65 so I went with that, too. I kind of wish I would have gone with the 3" 1-chamber Flowmasters instead because, in hindsight, I realize it would have been no more difficult than than running the 2.5" pipe the way they did it. It does have a rather deep sound, a lot deeper than I expected with the 2.5" pipe and Flows rather than the 3". One thing I did notice is that it no longer sounds like a Camaro, I guess due to the absence of the crossflow style muffler. Also, 1-chamber flowmasters (at least in my case) don't really have that 'tinny' (not to be confused with 'tiny'!) sound, but more of a deeper rumble.

I would lower them both and mount them level. Then move the driver side muffler in a couple of inches so both sides are even. Finally, put some 3 or 3 1/2in. stainless tips past the bumper. If you do lower them it shouldn't be any lower than a crossflow muffler. What do you think?

You're crazy!!

You don't wanna compete with a 1 chamber.

Hookerman, you're right, it might not (looking down, kicks the dirt, mumbling 'damn 305'). But seriously, it's all gonna be in what your preferences are-- I guess if you want just loud, you could go with straight pipes or glasspacks or if you want just a little less loud, try a 1-chamber. Personally, my favorite would probably be a real old school musclecar with 2-chamber flowmasters and true duals, but that isn't really a realistic option on our cars (without some very extensive and creative exhaust routing). I don't have a converter right now, so it is louder than I expected. A converter would probably give it a more mellow sound, which I was expecting. I noticed our converters don't have a baffle in them like my previous 1-chamber installations, and I now know that that baffle does a lot to quiet the exhaust. Idle sounds really good, but driving can get a little annoying, especially since I just sent my radio through those great pearly gates in the sky. I hope to have some sound files after this weekend. I just dowloaded Mark's soundfile and it does sound bad**s -- I like that throaty sound. I just gotta figure something out for tips 'cause I think I'm gonna do a number on my rear bumper.

Alright, I got two clips. Couldn't get the laptop to record worth a crap so I took two mpg clips with a digital camera. Just ignore the video, I just took them for the audio. The first one is from inside the car, the second one is about 15 feet behind the car. Right click 'save as' to download.

Exhaust clip 1

Exhaust clip 2

I took it at night so I didn't rev up too much... only about 3-4K rpm or so.

I really hate Flowmasters because EVERYONE uses them but that sounds really nice. I would actually put that same setup on my 'project' car if my friend didn't already have it. I would never hear the end of it if I did.
