VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

Check it out guys, VIS Racing just pissed me off by coming out with this after I bought my Daytona hood.

Here it is....and P.S. Vis Racing DOES NOT show this product on their website...just give them a call.

Well with all that glare and grafix, I have no idea how that would look on a car. Don't get too pissed, might look like crap. haha.

Tell them to get you a pic of it on a car, or even a real pic, like one of it in a room so you can photo chop it onto a car. That pic is useless.

I called them and found out its a 2.5" cowl *MAYBE* 3" but nothing bigger than 3" for sure.

Also they dont even have a picture of that hood on their site, so the guy told me to check back after January 2nd (X-mas Vacay) and they should have a new picture and such for us.

Well think about it:

Because of the war in Iraq about 80% of Carbon Fiber is now being used on the war for weapons, gear and the such so its scarce for CF Producing companies like VIS Racing. Also this is the ONLY Carbon Fiber hood that us 3RG GEN guys can get our hands on, also its a 2.5-3" cowl-not just a flat replacement hood and lastly it wieghts substantially less than Fiberglass hoods and is stronger and doesnt have the effect of warping like Fiberglass does easily.

So $900 for a Carbon Fiber, 2.5-3" Cowl Induction, SUPER lightweight hood? Sounds good to me since my FG was $600....another $300 for a wider cowl, lighter weight, and less problems from winter to summer due to warpage hood is perfect pricing.

Year One has had a Carbon Fiber hood for a few years now and it is only $800. There are others that will make one on request as well.

Here is the link to the CF hood made for Year One >>> http://www.yearone.com/pco/G_0907/0221.asp

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

LMAO. You guys kill me, its like alot of poeple on here are always talking about thats too pricey, thats too much, why does that cost so much.

STOP COMPLAINING as I dont see you making any of these products for us for cheaper...

So tell me this, if you made the ONLY...I REPEAT...ONLY, Carbon Fiber COWL Hood for the 82-92 Camaro...what would you charge?

I bet it wouldnt be under $900....considering some of our FIBERGLASS HOODS cost in excess of $600 NOT SHIPPED.

I dont want to seem like I am yelling or anything like that, just wanted to state what I wanted to state in my Camaro tail lights thread...when everyone says $200/pr for lenses only is wayyyy to much...UMM YEAH, I dont see ANYONE in the world making us aftermarket lenses so there.

Maybe one company will come along and buy the lenses and add a new housing to them and resell them for a complete swap. But I am positive it wont be under $400 a set...

Thanks for listening..and enjoy your stay here at www.THIRDGEN.org

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

So is the VIS hood constructed of CF throughout? or Is it just CF laid over a fibreglass core?

Same q's go for the Year one CF hood?

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

Judging from the pic it might look better than the joeblong (sp?) hood. I've always liked the wideness of it but was never to fond of the rounded edges of the cowl.

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

Thats a decent price and I'll think about picking up one eventually. Look at it this way, go buy a brand new fiberglass hood from say...ASCD and then buy some decent PPG 2 stage paint that matches your existing body color. Then in case you can't DIY paint you have to pay someone else. Your EASILY up near 800-850 bux. The only thing that turns me off about that hood is I'd have to drill 2 holes in it for my hood pins.....

Yeah, that was my thoughts exactly...with any other glass hood, I'd have to pay someone to paint it, whereas with this carbon one, I can buy it and just put it on, and it would be something you didn't see everyday on a thirdgen. That's why the price isn't that bad to me. My buddy has a 240sx he plays around with--his fiber hood was like $700. He thought that was expensive!

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

they do have it listed on their website... its listed as a 1993-1997 hood for some reason... yet it dont look like it would fit on a 4th gen... I guess someone just screwed up on the website...

on similar hoods for the 93 and up camaros it says to look for a badge that says "ISO certified 100% real carbon fiber material"

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

you dont need hood pins for VIS hoods. I have a CF hood from VIS racing on another car of mine, and it has bolt holes to mount existing hood latch. Im sure they are all like that.

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

Just to clarify, when you run anything other than a steel hood its always a good thing (safety assurance) to use hood pins. All our fiberglass hoods have the locations for stock hood latches and the spring...BUT at 75 miles an hour your fiberglass or CF hood will rip itself right off the hood hinges...while a steel hood tyipically won't.

And do yours rip off? Are you a manufacturer? No steel inner structure?

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

I've driven my fiberglass hood at around 70 miles an hour and that was when i had forgotten to lock the two hood locks, and when I would hit potholes my hood would be loose and shake and make annoying naging sounds, but it was still somewhat locked down so I don't think it would just fly up like that..

Carbon Fiber = Carbon Riceber, unless you were to paint it so the rice dont show if your going to do that why not put a fart cannon on it and a 5ft tall wing

Come on now, you know Carbon Fiber doesnt mean *****....CARBON FIBER ROOF SCOOPS mean *****...haha.

I like CF because the look is immacualte, a 3D type look...nothing beats it, then it weighs like 30-60% less than fiberglass all dependning on the part.

Like a driveshaft. Precision Driveshaft makes CF driveshafts for ANY CAR. I quoted one for my camaro and got back with $900 for the driveshaft, yes alot, but its CF that supports 2800ft lbs and has been drag tested to survive 60ft times under 1.6

Steel = 16lbs (give or take)
Aluminum = 11lbs
CF = 6lbs

Although rotating mass like this isnt a huge factor....its still a factor.

Straight from Precision Driveshaft themselves

Advantages of Carbon Fiber
  • Lighter than steel or aluminum.
  • Three times torsional strength of steel.
  • Torsional spring rate allows better tire hook-up.
  • Torsional spring rate allows smoother shifting.
  • Less shock load to the differential.
  • Eliminates or dampens high speed vibrations.
  • Reduces transmission and differential breakage.
  • Characteristics can be varied by changing the wind, angles or diameter. PST offers both steel and 7075 Billet Aluminum yokes.
  • In drag racing applications - a better 60 Ft. time.
  • ET's have been lowered in some cases by as much as .120.
  • In stock car racing better control out of corners is the result of the torsional spring rate.
  • In road racing smoother shifting and better durability of transmission and differential have been reported.
  • Tested on Cobra's at 180 MPH on Dyno with no vibrations.
  • A much greater safety factor - carbon fiber will return to a fiber and not create shrapnel under the car, as would aluminum or steel shafts.

not knocking the meterial knocking on the look, it would be great if it wasnt a totaly different color than your car, granted it would look good on a black car, but to many rice boys have ruined it for all. As for the drive shaft, im looking to get one to, its actually worth it as mentioned above

**** YEAH!!! Haha...I got the Daytona FG right now...

Someone tell me why most distributors sell their product for the most amount? Lol. I think its funny because wouldnt you want to sell your own product the most or what?

Just wondering because Carbon Creations sells that hood above for $699 but the place I found it sells it for $594

Same as with ANYTHING...MSRP vs Actual Retail It makes the shelf price APPEAR to be a "discount".

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

On my FG Daytona I am using my BLOWN struts to hold it up...holds it just perfect...lol, but with the CF hood you would def have to hit up some low tension struts, I know of a place that has these for any car any year but I cant find the damn website...I think it might be gone or name changed???

SEARCH Low tension hood struts on google...Im @ work right now so that should help for now if anyone feels they need to find struts for these hoods or for their FG hoods.

Im no bodyman or painter but reviews are just saying its just like painting a car usually, just more wet sanding and clear coating to protect it....but if we could have a body man who has done CF tell us that would be appreciated....

i will have my friend ask his body shop guy about painting CF and i will write back with a reply

i dont think CF would look bad on a black camaro, like i said im just not a fan of the black CF on a other than black color car

Re: VIS Racing *Carbon Fiber COWL Hood*

It appears to be "wet" carbon fiber. If you plan on getting this hood and painting it I would try to get it in "dry" carbon fiber. It doesn't have that glossy look and is even lighter.
