That kind of thing is just not for me. I guess maybe to an old wood hauler pick up truck but not to a Camaro. Thats just my opinion.

flat black paint does not make for a rat rod. generally rat rods referes to prewar cars that been built or put together on cheap from things readily available. A lot of current rat rods are build to try replicate hot rods from the 50's that were work in progress.

True, my grandfather had a black fenderless 32 Ford with steel bomber seats in the 40's when he got back from the war. But like ever other fad the rat rod look has extended to just about every vehicle with flat black paint. I'll look for the photos but a friend of mine PPG Semi-gloss blacked his 89 Formula then added a black formula decal kit and black GTA crosslace wheels, Darth Vader style it looks mean.

rat rod truck
sorry but a 70 something full size Chevy spray painted black is not a rat rod. remove the front clip, drop it to the ground, chop the top and slap on a set of zoomies and then.... maybe then... it might be a rat rod.

Exactly. Making a nice "Rat Rod" takes some effort.

Personally I love the military looks used in some "rat rods" and traditional rods.
Look at the F-Bomb camaro from Hot Rod Magazine. Wrong era car to have a WWII feel but it just plain works. Olive flat paint, nose art, black wheels.....
If I were to build a "military influenced" thirdgen, I'd use a camaro and do the paint tan, with black 15" D-Slot wheels, beefy tires, and an interior done in flat colors, a fabricated metal dash and a switch for everything mounted above the windshield with lots of indicator lights. Maybe even an attitude indicator and other gauges from an aircraft salvage yard, definately a CB radio with a few antennae on the back hatch.
Man I never thought of this before I read the Rat Rod argument in this post. I really want to build it now.... Like a soldier comes back from WWII and builds a 30's Ford, why wouldn't a soldier come home from Desert Storm in the early 90's and build a thirdgen?

Re: How would you Rat Rod your 3rd gen Firebird?
My work in progress. Hand shaped the hood from sheet metal. Welded lots of half-inch steel tubing underneath the hood for support. Flat black BBQ heat resistant rattle can paint on the exhaust. Used mineral spirit-thinned flat black Rustoleum from a compressor sprayer for the hood. Will eventually get the rest of the car painted flat black the same way when the spring semester is over. Only spot of color color on the car will be a polished and clear coated copper billet grill across the front hood vent. I'm also still considering just ripping out all the carpet and Rhino-lining the interior floor-pan.
But since both my inside AND outside driver's door handles broke this past week, I'll be completely rebuilding the doors from the outer skin inward.
