budget 350 swap

he guys I got a 91 rs that I hope by the end of the summer to have swaped over to a 350, I read sooties thread and got some great info on what to expect when swaping.

anywho im not big on spending my money lol but I got a complete good shape 010 block 350 ($150) that im going to put on a set 081 heads ($75) that were lightly bowl blended that I put z28 springs and eliminated the exhaust rotators on, with a edelbrock performer intake ($50) that I will notch the center bolt holes to fit, top street performance hei ($55), and using either an 1850 holley or a 1979 qjet that I have been playing with and setting up to cliff ruggles stage 1 specs. car came with shorty headers and cat delete.

don't want to swap out the 2.73 gears at this time, down the road I have a y87 rear end out of an 01 v6 Camaro that came with disk brakes, 3.42 gears and an auburn limited slip.

for a torque converter im not against changing it, maybe to a 95-up s10 one, I believe they stall 2000-2200.

for a cam im looking at either an elgin e922 which is 214/224 ($107) or the e1166 which looks to be a copy of the crane 216/228 cam ($123), which one should I go with? I like the 216/228 one or should I go with something completely different? no roller here, like I said im cheap lol

Re: budget 350 swap

your cam and tq are really dependent on the whole package so the 2.73s are not going to work well with stuff you get thinking about the 3.42, if you have already why wouldnt you just do it all at once. what trans are you using? if its the 700 is it going to be lockup or not? you care more about racing it than street, or is it just going to be a street cruiser?

yeah its the 700r4, id like to keep tc lock up, its not a daily driver but its something id like to maybe make a daily driver here and there during the summer time and take it on some long trips, but would like to have something that when I stomp on it, it gets moving.

Re: budget 350 swap

your going to want to put the other axle in, the 273s suck the get moving out of any car. the holly 1850 and quad are vacuum, so you dont want to go crazy with the cam. personally i would go with what i went which is a manual 4150 holley, which opens up any sort of cam/configuration you want. you dont have to worry about vacuum and you can get a rebuildable core 650 or something if you want to save money. going fast costs money. i got a custom converter when i had my trans built, the guy asked all about my car and it is certainly the best way to go for street manners and racing it both.

Re: budget 350 swap

Mechanical secondary carburetors are recommended for racing cars. They react to quick bursts of fuel without bogging. For all-out performance they are a better choice as they react directly to throttle position, no matter what your engine thinks it’s ready for. That being said, a properly tuned vacuum secondary on a street car can match the mechanical secondary’s performance.

Vacuum secondary carburetors work best on mid to heavyweight street cars with automatic transmissions. The secondaries open more slowly with a lesser “hit,” which is easier on an automatic transmission and feels smoother to the driver. They are more forgiving than a double pumper because they work by sensing engine load. The secondaries open based on a vacuum signal from the primary side that works against a spring. When the spring resistance is overcome by this vacuum, the diaphragm pulls the secondary throttle plate open. The fuel comes from the main jets or metering plate at this time.

Re: budget 350 swap

once you take the original hei out you dont really need to have the pcm, you need someway to lock the 700, there are a few ways to do it automatically but this is cheap.
have to convert the pump relay and regulate the fuel pressure.

Re: budget 350 swap

thanks for the link for the lock up switch! at this moment I don't want to shell out money for a double pumper, I know they would give me more seat of the pants power when I step on it but I'll live with what I got at the moment, back to the original question which one of the 2 cams would you choose or would you pick something different?
