At least everyone is OK I hope and the damage looks repairable.
Good luck to you getting the car sorted soon.

Looks mostly repairable. Its the metal part of the front bumper right? That comes off. So it seems all you really need to worry about is the front part of the body. I would go after that old guys insurance hard. If it was in PA he would be the one paying for the damages.

If it's a total, insurance companies give you the option of keeping your car, but with a lower pay out.

Re: !@#$ MY LIFE
The reason I made the comment is that about 2 weeks ago, a member on here got into a "slight bender" and it didn't look bad at all, and the insurance co. totaled it. Of course he also bought it back for like 400 dollars. But a salvaged title now. I hope this is not the case!

Re: !@#$ MY LIFE
Yeah, they'll most likely total it. Sometimes though you can 'sweet talk' them into giving you JUST below the total amount, so say that the breaking point is $3,900 you can maybe get away with $3,700 or so. I would try for that IF they want to total it. That way you keep a clean title and get more than enough cash to fix the car.
It takes a lot of talking though, and an understanding insurance agent.

Re: !@#$ MY LIFE
The value of a Salvage title car is 1/2 of a standard title. The reason is this, even if it is in perfect condition, 1) you already took a buyout (or someone else did) and 2) There will always be this lingering question "is it right"
So As long as you do not care, and understand that a Salvage or Rebuilt title is going to be a really hard sell, then do what you want.
I purchased a 9000 mile "Salvage Title" 1995 Formula convertible for $10,000 in 1998. I fixed a few things, made it look good, (it was already straight). I figured it would be fun to keep, but if I could sell it for a profit, good for me. I sold it for $15,000... I got lucky tho.

Yeah salvage title just makes it harder to sell that's all. You are required to make it know before sale and in adverts that it's a salvage title which scares off buyers. Especially when it's older and collectors are looking to buy.

Not sure what state you are in, but some states (like good 'ol NJ) make you jump through hoops to get the car registered with a salvage title. In NJ, you have to make an appointment to go to 1 of 4 state inspection facilities in the state. Then they go over EVERYTHING with a fine tooth comb. And then, if they feel like EVERYTHING IS LIKE NEW, they will let you register it.
My friend went through this, and it took him 4 trips and over a year for them to let him register his car.

Re: !@#$ MY LIFE
In Michigan they do not issue Salvage titles after so many years. My wife totaled our 2005 Buick Rainer V8 and they paid out for it. I paid $700 for a running, drivable AWD truck. They valued it at $6500 - $1000 Deductible - $700 for repurchase for it.
Of course my car never went to a salvage yard, it went from the wreck to the repair shop to my house.
You might not end up with a Salvage title, in the end they might just not fix it, then you get whatever they deem the value is, and you get paid, if you chose to fix it would be up to you, but you might have to invest more into it.

Re: !@#$ MY LIFE
In Illinois if a vehicle has a salvage title you must be a licensed mechanic to "fix" it and retitle it. This just reillustrates the point that if you own an older car you need to have it appraised and insured for the highest amount possible. Regular insurance may choose to go by the book value regardless of what has been done to the car. 3 months ago When I bought my 91 Z/28 vert for restoration it was appraised at $6000 in decent shape.
If you get a salvage title, put it on a frame machine and keep a print out showing how straight or crooked it is. It would be your saving grace if you wanted to sell it down the line.
