Hey guy's the speedometer gauge in my dash doesn't work, when I accelerate it just moves somewhat.



I think it's the sensor but I dont know where that is?

Could someone tell me?

the cable is probably justy loose in the tranny, check the cable comming down on the driver side of the tranny

Also, I have gauges in the dash for battery and 2 other things I think that don't work at all for some reason. Any ideas on why nothing would be showing up. They just light up to show how full/ low they are, they dont have a pin rotating.

Which part is the tranny under there? I only know the basics and I dont know which wire would be the speedometer one.

Ok so I put the car up and cleaned off all around the sensor and then took it out...its a 4 circle type thing with only prongs in 3 of the holes. I don't think it's loose because it was in their pretty snug so I took it out and wiped it off and everything and then put it back in and it's still not fixed, the speedometer just wiggles when you drive instead of showing an accurate readout.

Your speedometer cable could be broken, if so one end of it will be turning as you drive but the other end will not. It would be just rubbing the two broken ends together and causing your needle to jiggle. 84 should be cable driven not sensor driven.

Thats what my dad said too, but it has three prongs in a four part plastic piece, and that's the only thing I see on the side of the drivers side of the tranny.

Could it be somehwere else or could it accually be sensor driven.

The temp, oil, and battery gauges are accually digital too, not like a number or anything but it's not the kind with a pin, it just has a few lights that light up around in that curve around the circle to tell u how how/low it is.

Do you have the original speedo in the car?

From reading your description above, not too certain that you found the speedo cable assembly. True, it's located on the drivers side but, near the tailshaft housing. A cable driven speedo will have a flexible steel outer coating and will be attached to the transmission with a round female coupler. Find that then simply use a pair of channel locks to unfasten it from the transmission. Check the end of the drive cable for signs of wear. You may need to also remove the speedo gear housing from the transmission to inspect the female end of the plastic driven gear. But first check your cable for breakage. Replacing the speedo cable isnt that hard but it'll consume some time.

So you're saying that your entire gauge cluster is a factory digital including the speedometer?

I think I was looking at the wrong cable, it's not a digital gauge, the oil temp and battery gauges are light up with lights instead of with a pin but the only other two gauges are speed and gas, speed being on the right and gas being on the left....the gas one is a larger gauge like the speed gauge.


I am positive it is the original gauge in there but I'm gunna get under the car again today and look around see if there are anymore wires.

Well I found the speedo cable and it is cable driven, I attached a drill to it to spin it at a constant rate and it will go to that rate but still wobble, Do you guy think this is my gauges are bad or what?

Seems you have a Berlinetta. There was no such thing as an '84 Camaro RS :P

All 82-84 Camaros were cable speedo driven. Make sure there is lubracation oil in the cable itself. IF there isnt any, or its low it would affect how it works. I know my speedo in my 83 wobbles a bit. It's mechanical though, so its expected to a degree

Hmm so me telling everyone the thing was a 84 Camaro RS was wrong.

Did the Berlinetta come in a V6? And it's not the entire dash that's digital, its just the oil temp (pressure) battery and engine temp just have lights that light up instead of a usual pin on a guage. The right big gauge is speed and the left big one is how much gas is in it.


Help me out guys, this car surprizes me every day with something new!

It's a gunmetal metallic and I painted the rims that came with it a flat black because they were rusty and everything and I thought the flat black would match the louvers

Yes, the Berlinetta came in V6 as well as V8. The berlinetta was the luxerious version of the Camaro, sporting the famous all digital instrument cluster for 1985 I believe. Tell me this- when you open the door, does the car play a little song for you?

Check this link out, it should tell you just about anything you need to know. Also, we can futhur assist you if you provide the RPO codes for us.

The RPO codes are "Regular Production Options", and they are printed on a sticker usually in your middle console. They are 3 letter groups, and each grouping designates a particular thing. For example..If you have a rear window defogger, you might see "DP0", have a 5 speed tranny? "T2I" or something, I just made those up, but you get my idea. There are about 35 of these numbers written down, so copy them all down, and post back here, and I'll decode them all for you, it will tell you exactly what your car is.

Did every Berlinetta come with the all digital gauge cluster? Because mine doesn't have that.

Just read that the berlinetta came with a 4 speed auto, so I was wrong with that, but I don't have the all digital gauge cluster

I have been reading on that site and I'm convinced it's a 1984 Camaro Sport Coupe, a slight better version of the base coupe, but it has a 4 speed automatic with overdrive and 107 HP.


It seems like whoever bought this car got all the pretty options such as bucket seats and wood accents on the dash, and an upgrade sound system.

Thank you very much man, your a great help. But back to the entire start of the thread, I think my gauge cluster is broke , the speed gauge anyway, so I think I'll have to get up to some of the junkyards this weekend to look for a new one.

Do I need the exact gauge cluster for the car? Like with the gas on the left and the speed on the right. Could I get a gauge cluster with RPM's on the left and hook it up to the car, or isnt that possible if it didnt come with it?

You can install a guage cluster from another camaro, yes. It would require wiring, but you can do it. I'm not a guy to ask about wiring though :P But as I mentioned, you can install a different guage cluster at the cost of wireing it all up.

Do not confuse idot lights for digital gages. Big difference. Only 87 and 88 GTAs had digital clusters. There is such thing as V6 coupes without Berlinetta package. They're called Camaros.

he is not saying that his cluster is digital. there were some camaros that came with for lack of a better term "semi-digital" gauge clusters. they come with 3 gauges: oil pressure, temp, and volts that are a circle with lights at go from teh 6 oclock position counter clockwise to the 12 oclock position., these light up red to show the levels and are needleless.

tyler360 your cable is most likely broken and there is no need to replace the spedometer there is almost no way that it just stops functioning. i sugest you replace the cable.

ah, either way you can see the vin number at clean as day when you walk up to a car, Just go to any walmart, you can get at least 50 of them

no doubt, not knocking it. Just sayin. Kinda crazy tho, it is basically the social security number of your car and it can be exploited that easily... its sad. Kinda like that gift card issue, people writing down the numbers on the back of gift cards and then go home and check to see when there is money on them when someone else purchases them... not cool

Yup.
That's why I always cover the VIN on all my cars. I only uncover it for the inspection. On some cars, you can cover it inside, under the windshield, on others you can't and you need to use tape on the oustide of the windshield. Never had anyone pull off my tape, though.

I just bought a 1984 Z28 and my speedometer doesnt move at all and i dont where to look for the cable..Where is located??

Your car sounds alot like mine, 84, v6, sport coupe, thm 790r4 automatic tranny, norwood ohio manufacture plant, and wobbly speedometer. Mine doesnt go wonky til I get up to 50mph though. I'm definitely look in to it applying the info I gathered here and ill post if I learn anything pertinent that may help your cause.

Im also more computer literate than car, but with my camaro that is rapidly changing I suggest a haynes repair manual. They are very handy when just starting out.
