Tachometer help please

Have my 1987 firebird up for mot shortly
But the car has not registered any miles in the last three years
EVERYTHING except the tach works
Speedo fine
Rev counter fine
Every gauge except the tack which won't clock up miles
But another dash which I was told was working perfectly but when fitted is doing the same
There's no speedo or any other cables to the back of the cluster
Just the push in contact plastic circuit board
Can anyone help PLEASE

Re: Tachometer help please

Notice I have 63 views but no repleys guys
Has anyone come across this before
Guessing that the problem has to be before the cluster itself as the gauge change done nothing

Ok Buddy , we gotta clear up a couple of things here ....

First , does "up for mot" mean you have a vehicle safety inspection due with whatever serves as an "Inspection Station" in Ireland ? And if your miles don't add up will you fail the inspection ?

Also , you say "rev counter fine" (which is a "Tachometer" or "tach") and then go on to say "the tack which won't count miles" , you ARE referring to the "Odometer" (thing that counts the miles) , Yes ?

If so , this could prove somewhat daunting for you because the Speedometer working fine (reading the MPH or KPH you are traveling at) and the Odometer (reading the amount of miles or kilometers traveled) not working is a very Very VERY common problem with these odometers as the grease hardens and the little plastic gears turn to dust . Here in the states there are still enough parts kicking around that trying a few different ones will usually turn up one with it's odometer still functioning .

BTW , just so you know , there are not separate things controlling the Speedometer and Odometer outside of the cluster itself . In other words , If the Speedometer works and the Odometer don't , it's 100% certainly in the Speedometer/Odometer unit itself as both get their signal from the very same place (The "VSS or "Vehicle Speed Sensor" on the transmission's tailshaft housing) .

Re: Tachometer help please

I'm pretty sure the speedometer, odometer and trip odometer are driven by same circuit. If the speedo is working and the odometer and trip odometer are not then that probably suggests that the gauge board is at fault. Meaning you probably have a bad gauge and the replacement you tried may very well be a bad one also.

Meaning you probably have a bad gauge and the replacement you tried may very well be a bad one also. I believe there is a small drive gear in there that is a common failure point. So it would not surprise me if you have two speedometers with the same issue. If you can source one, I'd try another. Otherwise look around here on the forum for something like "odometer fix" as it's most likely a subject that's been covered many times.

Re: Tachometer help please

THANKS very much guys
Yes it is the odometer that clocks up the miles
Sorry guys for saying Tachometer
Will have a look through the gear cluster to check for faults
"GOOD NEWS " is I have a full years MOT from this morning
While I have the spare cluster in I will look at the original and see if I can see a fault
I douth its the circuit board as there was one on the back of each cluster so both tried

BTW
During MOT TEST it was mentioned that the light dip to the centre of the road as its a import it would be correct in the USA
Does anyone know we're I could purchase EU legal UK driving side headlights at a reasonable price
Seen USA standard for only £20
