motor smoking
I just purchased 89 Camaro with the TBI motor. Every time I started the motor starts smoking. It does go away after a few seconds. Any suggestions what it might be? Thanks

Re: motor smoking
Sounds like your valve seals are shot. Worn valves seals allow small amount of oil to leakdown while car is not running. Upon startup this oil takes a few seconds/minutes to burn out of the combustion chambers. I am an original owner of a 1987 IROC and had valves seals replaced with only 500 miles on the car for that very reason. If it continues to smoke for more than a couple of minutes you have other issues.

I wouldnt waste the money repairing the terrible 305, just slam a new engine in it for a couple hundred more and make double the power.

Re: motor smoking
They do that right before they go bad... after they start smoking, they start hanging out with the wrong crowd like behind the dumpster at school, violating curfew, becoming truant, and otherwise failing to become productive members of society.

Re: motor smoking
many times cars the age of ours have been driven hard & put away wet . meaning not properly maintained . oil & filter changes are one of the biggest ignored items . oil sludge is a killer , it can plug up the draining holes (front & rear of cylinder heads) and allow oil to build up in cylinder heads causing smoke on start . all that said many times (not always) your problem could/might be cured by a good cleaning of cylinder heads . it's a dirty messy job . remove valve covers , clean all sludge build-up , pay close attention sludge is cleared from drains back to crankcase (front & rear of each cylinder heads) . it could help with your problem , I have seen it done many times . good luck ...
