As you can see in last picture above there is no room to go anywhere. one of the tubes has a dimple banged in where it hit the K member and the other is up against the brake line and someone put header wrap on it.

Hedman Longtubes are pretty good for the price, but I'd get the elites(model line that's just ceramic coated) as they aren't that expensive either.
If getting longtubes and you have emmissions regulations in your state(especially if they do a visual check) then you will not pass. You also have to custom fab a y-pipe for longtubes. Depending on what enging/setup you have I'd just go for hooker shorties pn. HOK-2055. Unless you are running a fairly modded 305, or a mild 350, I doubt that you would like the results that longtubes would give you.

Sirs,
One thing I have noticed on the various headers like Headman they are using a 3" collector on their headers which is only good if you are making 380 to 500 hps on a v8. A good source to judge how to properly size your exhaust would be to get your hands on a catalogue AND a cassette tape from Ed Hennerman from Headers By Ed. 3" collector would kill ALL the torque on a street car. 2-1/2" collector and a primary tube size of 1-5/8" would do well on a 300 to 400 hp v8 car.

You would be faster and get better mpg with 2.5" collectors. You are running this on the street as a street car correct? You really need to get Headers By Ed catalogue and read it. I used his advice on a 92 W41 Achieva SCX and it ran circles around most cars with a custom header using his advice.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
So any sbc headers will bolt up to my existing exhaust. I was wondering if there was a set of headers that would drop right in and bolt right up with no exhaust modifications.

You won't find a set of headers that will mate up to a stock Y pipe if that is what you are asking.
Your best bet is a set of headers with a matching Y pipe that is made for a thirdgen F body. Hooker 2460 headers and 16767 Y-pipe is one example.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Not going to lie after reading through this thread I just picked up ppls personal opinions and arguing. I don't want to read through 8000 posts to get decent info. I don't care for extreme performance, I have a very special car to me and I want to leave it very original. Which shorty headers just bolt right in. (Looks like none of the long tubes do) and what is needed with those headers...gaskets y-pipe x-pipe etc. Just want a deep mean growl without modding the **** out of anything. Just straight Bolton. I have a flow master 40 series. Catless currently.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Plenty of folks have used them on this site. They make an LS swap version too. Pretty decent for the money but don't fit as sexy as the blackhearts. As with all longtubes on these cars, you'll have to fab up the rest of the exhausts (unless you buy the Hooker Dual exhaust to compliment their headers).

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
So, I have been reading on this post. Don't scream at me, but I've been sold now on hooker 2055 headers and y pipe. I have a 92 RS 305 TBI. I went to summit looked up the 2055, Thought they were long tubes, but anyways, they look like shorties or mids. I checked fitment and they flagged as not fitting. So, help me out here. I am planning on deleting my smog/air pump, egr valve delete and removing all that piping that comes off the headers in multiple spots. I'm also fitting a Spectre low profile air plenum hooked up to a TPI intake for cold air intake robbing some air from the raditor scoop. So, I guess my biggest question is with all this custom fitting do I want TPI headers without all that air fittings on them, just O2 sensors. I was also thinking that long tubes were the best way to go for best flow......3" all the way back. I'm not sure that long tubes will fit where the origional Y pipe goes now. They terminate too far to the rear of the engine compartment Right?? I'm new to all of this, but have been reading myself into circles. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Long tubes just sound bad ***. I mean just saying that they are on the car not the actual noise they make. Can you get 2055 with out the air holes in them. Hate to get new headers and pull all that off or plug it up. Is there a 2055 that is Clean? Just curious.
