Just hope this is carbon build up
Hello all, Im new here, but not in any way new to cars. Im currently restoring a 1969 Chevy CST/10 with my dad back to running condition: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=223124
At any rate, since I needed a daily driver, and my aunt had to get rid of a car at her apt complex, she gave me her 1990 Firebird. Aka Slowbird, its got the 3.1 (but, I was very suprised at its sound, man that V6 idles deep).
It had a busted water pump, and cracked oil pan (temporarily sealed with some crap, but still leaked). So I just gotta fix it up, and its mine.
To get to the point, I very well assume the car has sat for a long time. So, I would imagine its gotten a good amount of carbon build up from sitting/never running much for how ever long.
So, I began to notice that when it was revved up any, beyond 2500 rpm, it starts spitting out some dirty water. Has black particles in it, which is what I assume is the Carbon, but the brown of the water now has me concerned. Though, it doesnt feel the least bit oily, so Im assuming its just dirt. My -guess- is just that it is water from the catylitic converter, but Ive never seen this much come out of any car. My dad cant check it out til this sunday when he comes over (Hes got the tools for the water pump bolts... love the simplicity of my CST10's 350 more and more every day) as he is a tech at a cadi dealership.
Video: 1st rev was to 1700 rpm, 2nd to 2500-3000 rpm, the last was WOT to 3500-4000 rpm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2InpGl5jDuc
I dont run the car much, just when I need to move it around, out of the garage.
btw-this car has 267k on the odometer, runs great. Gotta love American engineering

probably just water and carbon since its never really getting warmed up or anything, at any rate that car looks to be in really nice shape visually, its just begging for a 350 swap.

I hope so. Just worried since I havent seen a car spit that much, as often as it does. Just needs a good highway run I guess.
Yes it is beggng for one, its depressing the amount of room that 3.1 leaves behind, haha. In time, maybe. That CST/10 is #1.
Thanks man, besides the typical GM clear coat leaving the paint in some spots (my step-dads 91 Cavalier did the same) and a fixed/primered dent on the passenger fender (bet its a parking accident, I can hardly see that corner too when parking it, and Im 6 foot), the body is great. Interior was well kept too.
I didnt know you could get a v6 bird with the T/A gfx

Re: Just hope this is carbon build up
i had a car/truck that sat a long time and when i turned it on and revved it a bit black crap would fly out. it was just the condensation from the early morning air that turned to water then got shot out my exhaust pipe which had carbon build up in it from burning rich for awhile.
i love the truck! think truck is my next direction.... but maybe a K5. looking good!

Yeh, it was in Cali before being shipped here to south TX, guess that may also be a factor, since the ECU is still relearning.
Thanks, my CST/10 is my pride and joy, bought it last january for $500, no motor or transmission. Dropped a rebuilt SB350 and TH350 trans a few weeks ago. Slow building, since Im paying out of my own pockets (Im 16)

Re: Just hope this is carbon build up
check the oil and as long as it isn't like chocolate milk, i'd just take the car out for a spirited 20-30 minute drive and let it warm up and that exhaust will blow all the condensation right out.

Re: Just hope this is carbon build up
That car looks really clean.Wish I could run across a deal like that(really cheap or free).Mines pretty clean as well but it wasnt free. I`d do as stated, just check out the oil and take it for a spin.It doesnt look like too much to worry about.I bought a F.O.R.D thunderbird that sat up for awhile and did something similar.Drove it for about a year then sold it when the aod trans started slipping.
its just begging for a 350 swap.
