What's it worth?
Hello Everyone:
I'm looking at an ad for a 1990 Formula, 305 TBI, TTops, 122k. The seller says it's in very good condition, no rust, power everything, brakes, exhaust and tires in good condition. He stresses no rust anywhere. I haven't looked at the car yet but I'm interested. He's asking $2,800.00. The car looks good from the pictures. If it drives nice, what do you think it is worth? I'm thinking somewhere between $2,200.00 to $2,400.00. Thanks for the replies.

pesronally I think that $2,800 is a fair price considering the car is 18 years old and rust free and runs good.you have to remember to that alot of people that sell a car always start out high.

Re: What's it worth?
Karrfire had a great idea. What appears to be the rationale on here is: take KBB and multiply that by 2. If the car is red or black (regardless of condition) multiply by 4. If it's a rare color (rare because no one wanted it) also multiply by 4. If you spent $3000 in repairs (trans, engine rebuild, paint job) add that in too. And if you really love the car and don't want to sell it (and we all love our Formulas, no matter how old and unreliable they get - it's a syndrome I'm not immune to) tack on another $2000. This is why we see cars on here with KBB values in the $2000 range being seriously offered at $5000-8000.
Having said that, KBB doesn't account for car color. And if cars ARE selling, consistently, across the country, at prices substantially higher than KBB, then KBB needs to adjust its values accordingly. For some reason NADA gives higher values than KBB.
Finally, one more note: RARE doesn't necessarily mean GOOD. Some muscle cars in the 60s had bench seats and column shifters. These were rare. Does that make them good? 4 cylinder Firebirds are also relatively rare. Are they better than the more common V8 models? I don't think so. Let's suppose the 305 TBI (base engine on the Formula) is as rare as the 350 TPI (L98). Does that make a TBI Formula worth as much as a Formula 350? Think about it.

I would love to buy some GTA 350 T-top with low (40-60K) miles for KBB prices. Know of one?

Factor in location of the car too. Where I live, there is no demand therefore my car is pretty valueless. Move my car to the Deep South and I might be able to sell if for what I think it's worth.
Each car is as valuable as the person who wants it will pay.
Sorry. No help.

Re: What's it worth?
kelly blue book or nada are guides for prices on cars 10 years or newer..considering the newest 3rd gen is 16 years old consider the books useless...if the car is in good shape and needs no major repair...$2800 is a steal..try to fix up one and see what that will cost considering most are beat to death and have had way too many hacks do work on them
