Cargo Hatch Cover Installation Project

Cargo Hatch Cover Installation Project
Ok guys. My Cargo area had no cargo cover (curtain) or the mounting for the "cups.". So I took the intiative to "hide" my amp and subwoofer box. This project took 1 day to measure and think about my approach. Then it took me about 6 hours to do the cutting, bending, measuring and installation. There are a lot of pictures but for those who have thought about the idea, then here you go. I used a $30 Digital Caliper, some small self tapping screws, a 2" hole/drill bit, a metal strap from Lowes and some elbow grease.1Takingmeasurements.jpg?t=1298003399

Good looking job. I ended up doing the same thing on mine.

Okay. This panel is the one that is on the lowest rear of the hatch glass. If you can see, there are 2 knotches that are cut out. On the inside of the plastic panel, there is a metal brace/bracket that is riveted to support the "pull" of the curtain. There is no metal bracket on the picture with the yellow box because I removed it to install on my black plastic panel.

I am stuck on the brackets. I cut out the holes on the panels with a hole saw, I found a decklid undercover with the cutouts, and the mounts but I am really not good at fabricating.
Do you have any details about how you made the brackets or the mounting depth that the they need to be. I went to Lowes and all I could find were the long flat metal strips with the rebar/square/L shaped tubing.
I bought one made out of steel and one made out of aluminum and some self tapping sheet screws.

Do you have the caliper? after making the holes in the panels, I used the back end of the caliper to measure the depth of the panel to the sheet metal. THen I removed the panels. Then i visualy made the bends on the metal straps. Then I screwed down the straps with 1 self tapping screw JUST to hold the strap in place. Then I put the panels back on to see if the holes cut into the panel line with the straps. If the straps are lined up evenly with the holes, then your good to go. But if the straps push out the panel a little, then get a hammer and put the handle agianst the strap and push in to compress the straps to have the panel sit correctly to the body. Make sense? So after the straps are in and they are properly adjusted by position and depth, then remove the panels agian and screw down the rest of the strap. Then Put the panels back on. Then get your mounting cups and put them in the holes in the panel. then with a fifne tip marker mark the strap to note where you will need to drill to make the mounting holes for the cups. If your confident enough, just put in the cups and start drilling in the self tapping screws. I hope I didnt confuse you.

Yeah, I get it. That was not the answer I was wanting to hear. I blame your perfect looking brackets that do not look like they have been trial and error'ed at all. I think your craftsmanship sets up unrealistic expectations that someone may be able to emulate the results.
Seriously though, thanks for the info. I am going to mess with it tomorrow and maybe make a trip back out to the junkyard and find the car that the interior panels and mounting parts I grabbed off of. I dont remember if I looked for the metal mounting tab on that car or not. If I can drill some rivets out and grab me a mounting tab, I would rather do that than butcher metal into an ashtray.
