Installing steering shaft?

I can't for the life of me get my steering shaft to go onto the column shaft. Am I missing something??

Re: Installing steering shaft?

OE or aftermarket? The stock unit is telescoping. Are you compressing it? Are the splines & DD ends aligned? Are the steering wheel & wheels pointing straight ahead?

Oe. Seems to be a really tight fit. The splines are on the opposite end that goes into the steering box. This end has the pinch bolt but I can't get it to go in even with lube.

Re: Installing steering shaft?

Spread the socket, its probably been compressed from torqueing the bolt down

I'm not sure what socket you're speaking of. This is the factory intermediate shaft that has no u-joint on the end that connects to the columns shaft. From the looks of it either end just goes together and the pinch bolt goes thru the hole but if only it were that simple.

Re: Installing steering shaft?

I used a chisel and hammer to slightly spread the pinch. No issues.

It's been forever since I removed everything-does the end of he intermediate shaft go around the columns shaft or is it the opposite? Seems like other are about the same size making it such a tight fit.

Nvm I found a pic

Check post #4, pic #3—which I think answers your question.

So I can get it on with just a couple hits on a column I had inside but I still can't get it on at all with the column in the car.

Re: Installing steering shaft?

I simply made the pinch a bit wider with the chisel/hammer combo and pushed the shaft on the column end. Simple as pie. Not sure why you're encountering problems.

I had 3 thirdgen columns so I tried the others and they would go on the shaft too easy. I ended up taking my complete column apart and swapping the parts over to a column where the shaft fit fine but now I can't get the intermediate shaft to extend at all so I can bolt it to the s10 steering box.

Re: all the cool kids are doing this

Small update: so I finally swapped a different column in the car and my intermediate shaft fits easily onto it but the opposite end won't fit onto the s10 manual steering box. Also finally was able to get the shaft to extend by banging on it. :/

Re: all the cool kids are doing this

Will the upgraded Astro shaft work with the s10 manual box??

I see how there are splines but the factory shaft is way too small to fit around the s10 part.
