Play in joint steering shaft/gear

Hello!

Is there supposed to be a play in the joint between steering column/shaft and the shaft going to the steering gear? There is on mine and I find it disturbing since there's too much play in or "sliding" in my steering wheel when turning. I'm thinking I might replace the joint for a new one.

Of course there might be more reasons causing this but I've tried to look and this was the only significant play I found. Can a bad steering gear or pump cause this behaviour? The play can be felt on both front wheels as well as in the steering wheel.

I went to garage and tried to remove it today but it seems the space is too tight for it to come out. Tried to hit the shaft upwards towards the column but it wouldn't move far enough to came loose at the gear. Any good know-how here?

Re: Play in joint steering shaft/gear

I just did mine I started at the front by the box removed bolt and with a screw driver I pried the shaft back from the box. The hard part for mine was the rear column side bolt came out easy but took a lot of work to break the shaft loose from the column after I beat the shaft loose had to bend the break lines some and I pulled it out closer to the box I also have headers and it was still very tight getting it out.

Hi!

Okay, thanks! So it's difficult but doable then... nothing that broke when hitting the shaft that far upwards?

The headers and heads are currently removed from the car so I guess that imporve my odds wiht getting the shaft off, if I ever manage to get it loose from the gear

Re: Play in joint steering shaft/gear

Alittle penetrating fluid at the collapsible joint will help some.

Re: Play in joint steering shaft/gear

Alright! By "collapsable joint", do you mean on the middle of the shaft or the upper one close to the steering column?

There's some kind of a rubber on the middle of the shaft, is there a collapsable joint underneath it?

Thanks for helping!

Here watch this video. He is switching to a different style of shaft but he shows how to take the old one out.

Re: Play in joint steering shaft/gear

Thanks a lot! A very good video indeed. He purposed to cut the old shaft apart if it didn't come off, did I understand this correctly?

It seems to me that there has to be a collapsable joint on the shaft, otherwise I can't see how there's room enough for it to come off the steering gear by just knocking it backwards...

Yeah u could cut the thing in half but I'd be damn sure I had a good replacement first that part can't be ordered new.

Did you also have to notch yours to get the top bolt in like he did in the video?

Re: Play in joint steering shaft/gear

I took the upper joint off a 98 - 02 camaro/trans am bone yard steering shaft and installed it on a astro van clocked shaft, same as stock, bolt thru the center..

Re: Play in joint steering shaft/gear

So I can stick an upper joint from an 98-02 Camaro onto the Walter Racecraft modified shaft?

I don't know who this is, But if it's a clocked Astro Van shaft, then Yes, A bit of extra work, but fits like stock, 93 - 97 may be the same as well on the upper DD joint..

Note: You can also just notch it to make it work like the others, I just prefer the center bolt option...

Yes, it was really easy. Just a little at a time. Didn't really take much. FYI, my engine was out so I had all the room in the world.

I put the WR shaft on then marked through the bolt hole with a sharpie where to notch.
