My 2.8 has trouble staying cranked!! Whats the problem?
I have a 85 2.8 bird.Anyway,i was coming home this afternoon from a friends house and i tryed to crank it and would but it would die!Its never done that before. When im going its fine its just the idle. Also, when i finally got home i let it idle in the carport and it was fine,no lopes or anything. Then i shut it off and it did the exact same thing,it wouldnt stay cranked.Whats the problem,I just had a full tuneup new wired, distributor and all that.Any help please.
Thanks

What do you mean by "it won't stay cranked"? The starter doesn't engage the flywheel? The car dies after it starts? The key gets stuck in the crank position?

1. Try unplugging the MAF and starting the car
2. Check for vacuum leaks (cracked hoses)
3. Check the timing
4. Did you check the computer for codes?
5. Check the fuel pressure. You should get about 38 PSI when the key's turned from "off" to "on" - but without cranking the engine.
6. Check the TPS, if it's above 4volts (WOT) at idle, the computer enters "clear flood mode" and shuts off the fuel injectors
7. What else did you replace besides distrib cap/rotor, spark plugs & wires?

I was thinking it might be the Aic Valve.B/c i took it out and checked it and the plunger was stuck. Also b/c the vehicle would idle fine after being ran awhile.
Heres what all i have replaced:
Distributor,plugs,o2 sensor, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, battery.Thats all i can think of now.Anything else i can try and do you think it might be the iac valve.
Thanks

What do you mean by the IAC's plunger was stuck? You can't really move it by hand easily.. it's a stepper motor, and requires quite a bit of wiggling. If the pintle's carboned up you could clean it with "intake cleaner for fuel injected engines".
You keep saying you replaced the distributor- did you replace the whole thing, or just pieces? Is it still timed correctly? If the hold-down bolt wasn't tightened down enough after re-isntalling the distributor, the unit can spin and throw off timing.

Hah, cool, glad you found it- I'll have to add "replace IAC" to my list of no-start diagnostic procedures!
