86 Iroc won't start after running out of gas

86 Iroc won't start after running out of gas
My Iroc ran out of gas on my way home, so I filled her up and she wouldn't start. I figured I burnt the fuel pump because it was going out anyways. So I've just put a new pump and filter all in, and now my car wont turn over. I hear the pump turn on and I purged the system several times. I did notice when I checked the pressure on my fuel rail no fuel shoot out. But I'll check again tomorrow. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Don't worry your line has air in it. Disconnect your fuel line, put it in a bottle or something to catch your gas in when it primes and crank it over tell you have fuel. Usually if you turn you ignition on your fuel pump will prime for 2 sec so you could just turn it to the on position and off again and keep priming it so you don't draw your battery down trying to crank the motor over. If you just cant prime it for the life of you after that than go get some gas and fill your tank if you can. I have ran a few cars out of gas and have just filled the tanks full and have never had to prime the line. They start right up. Either way there is air in the line, simple fix.

Crank it over with fuel line disconnected and make sure fuel is coming out.

Just because you hear the pump run dose not mean it is primed.

Alright so I disconnect my fuel line and fuel was coming out. I do have fuel in my fuel rail too. I primed it about 15 times, but it still won't start. Do you think I might have a washed out cylinder?

You have fuel but you still need to make sure you have the right pressure as well.

After trying to start can you smell gas at the tail pipe?

Re: 86 Iroc won't start after running out of gas
When a car wont start for me I do 2 things after deciding it has power if it turns over and wont start. First I spray carb cleaner in the intake and try to start it. It if try's to start and dies it is a fuel issue. If that's not it and it is not flooded I pull a plug attach it back to the plug wire, set it on the motor were I can see the electrode good with it grounded to the block good and have some one try to start it to make sure it has spark. If you have fuel, spark, compression and air flow you will usually have a running motor. So if you cant get a pressure gage try spraying carb cleaner or either in the intake and crank it over. Don't spray a lot though just about a 1 sec blast will do it.

Re: 86 Iroc won't start after running out of gas
There should be a check valve in your fuel line some were so when your fuel pump primes it holds pressure. I don't know if it is part of the fuel pump or were it is but know its there and could be leaking by and not holding pressure too. Any one know were the check valve is located for the fuel line so it dose not back flow and hold pressure?

Re: 86 Iroc won't start after running out of gas
I'm getting a fuel pressure gage today to check. But I did spray starter fluid and it sounded like the car was about to start, but then it died. Sorry I'm knew with all this stuff I'm teaching myself as I go. All the belts and everything move in the engine when I try to crank it and the rpms go up a tad bit, I don't know if that helps. When I check the pressure what should I be looking for it to be?

Are you sure you got the right pump? That psi sounds right for a TBI car. For a TPI you should have 43.5 psi. Do you have the box the pump came in and the part number?

Re: 86 Iroc won't start after running out of gas
You don't need a high performance one, but you need one that will give you the correct pressure otherwise you won't be able to start your car.
Unfortunately the pump you bought is not the right one for your car. On the page you linked it states this part fits the following.
• 1985-86 Chevrolet Camaro 2.5L 4 Cyl
• 1988-1992 Chevrolet Camaro 5.0L V8 VIN: E
I assume you don't have a 4-cyl since its an IROC, the 5.0 VIN E cars are TBI, not TPI and use a much lower pressure.
If you want to go with that brand you need Part Number: 3117-07005951 which states it fits • 1986 Chevrolet Camaro 5.0L V8 VIN: F FI MFI
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Best is always a matter of opinion. I prefer AC Delco, Bosch.

You want a Delco EP241. It's a good quality stock replacement that will deliver enough fuel even with a modified engine.
And by the way, the check valve is in the pump since the question was asked earlier.

Thanks ^^^ I figured it was in the pump but was not sure. I thought it was probably part of the pump but was not for sure. Just know it was there.

You will never stop learning. Half the battle to fixing a car is just getting the guts to take something apart you have never worked on before. Also try to get a maintenance manual for your its the best way to learn how to fix stuff. I buy one every time I get a car. And don't ever get rid of the manuals you buy you will probably need them later in life.
