Preventative Maintenance for a looong road trip
Its weird I had to actually write out what PM meant, but I figure most of you guys are not familiar with trucking terminology.
heres the scoop. I have 101k on my 87 IROC. LB9 car. This thing is completely original. I just replaced the factory water pump and lower radiator hose due to a leak. I would love to address any other issue I may come across with this 1000 mile round trip Im planning.
Hoses. I am going to meticulously inspect all hoses and replace as necessary. first question here is, isnt there a known process to delete the throttle body coolant flow?
Belts and such. I may remove the air pump and AC compressor to cut down on chances of a blown out belt taking out others on its way.
Brakes, well Im planning a 4th gen rear end swap, so those should be fine, front I will have rotors turned, repack the bearings, and new pads... any advice on a speedo gear to make up for the new gear I will have?
One thing I think that is a problem is my gas tank holds alot of pressure. after a long drive if I take the cap off a big burp of pressure releases.. if this normal?
Any other things I should take a peak at? I bought this car from original owners 3 years ago and only had a handful of receipts for basics such as oil changes and spark plugs. any know parts I should keep spares of? I already plan to carry fluids, alternator, starter, and belts...

Re: Preventative Maintenance for a looong road trip
The gas tank pressure is normal, if anything you might want to get a newer style vented cap, but my OE style cap seems to work just fine.
I'd go ahead and replace all your belts. at 101k they should be close to needing it anyways.
Flush and replace all your fluids.
Go ahead and buy an ICM (Ignition Control Module) and just keep it in the glove box. It's a 15 dollar part that is most likely to go out in extended use. Really easy to replace on the road (just remove the dist. cap and replace the module).
Check the tread on your tires, you don't want to start out with "just enough" and end up with less than optimal tread when you make it back.
I'd carry a small tool box, some sections of wire, a quart of oil, quart of ATF, some brake fluid and a gallon of water.

My biggest question would be, how much do you drive this car right now? Can it be trusted?

Re: Preventative Maintenance for a looong road trip
I daily it in nicer weather. even when it has dipped into the 30s at night I'd fire it up in the morning and take off. I am not easy on it what so ever. I'm always wot merging onto highway. All it does is smoke a decent puff in the morning, I assume valve seals are shot, but I am not replacing them. Next year this engine will be gone.
But yea it basically sees daily action. I've put 7k miles on it in the past 3 years. The prior owners drove the **** out of it every summer and stored every winter like here

Wow.
What does this have to do with the TB coolant bypass?
