Is a Performance Distributor worth it?

I've got a rebuilt 355 with
Vortec heads
running the CCC
qjet with GMCOPO updated computer and prom

228/234 cam
Redline 5500-6000

Looking at a DUI Performance Dist kicking out 50,000..., I guess stock is 40,000?

So it's not too trick but slightly better than stock.....
In my case, is it worth it?

Chuck

Re: Is a Performance Distributor worth it?

Really no. Not on a mid engine. Stock dist. with a good module and coil will do everything you need it to do. The best thing you can do is put good plug wires on it. Something with low ohm resistance. I like MSD 8.5mm 50 ohm per foot plug wires

Even the high end CD ign. systems (spark boxes) and billet dist., etc is not going to gain you anything on a mild engine. They do work and they work great IF your engine needs it. I.E large duration cam, high idle speed, rich fuel tuning, high RPM use, etc

I ran down into the 11's on a pretty much stock HEI dist. in my camaro shifting at 6400 rpm. Now have that same setup in my V8 S10 with a 355, vortec heads, 10.24:1 compression, 214/224@.050" cam

Now on my camaro I have a better ign. system but have Brodix 200cc heads, 249/252@.050" cam, 10.38:1 compression, 1000-1100 rpm idle speed, shift at 7200/7300 rpm. I run a mallory 685 digital box. Mallory E core coil, MSD billet dist.

Re: Is a Performance Distributor worth it?

Thank you for that response!!
That is what I expected to hear.

I'm running 9.7/1 compression. Barely reaching 400 hp at he crank ..

Do you think that a perf dist helps the engine run smoother at all RPMs?

I think with my cam at 228/234 and still using my CCC Qjet with the Cliff Ruggles mods to the idle tubes (richer mix) .... It may benefit from a perf dist.

Re: Is a Performance Distributor worth it?

I ran a large cap HEI for years. The advantage to an aftermarket distributor is that it's a little easier to adjust the spark curve. It can be done with any distributor but it's easier with an aftermarket one. The only thing I did to the large cap HEI was a new cap, rotor and aftermarket coil.

Even the stock HEI module is better than an aftermarket module. It can easily provide enough spark up to at least 7000 rpm. The advantage of using an aftermarket ignition is the multi spark option. Instead of one large spark to ignite the fuel, there are multiple sparks in that short period of time.

In reality, you really don't need an aftermarket distributor unless your stock one is worn out. Bushings and parts do wear out over all the years of use which can cause all sorts of ignition problems that you would never even notice until a new distributor is installed.
