4 Bolt Gen 2 Casting numbers...
Hi All,
If a guy was looking for a Gen2 2, "one piece seal", 4 Bolt engine case, what is a good casting number? Or, is it like a Gen 1 and some 010 blocks are 2 bolt, some 4??
Thanks,
Cam

Gen 2 referring to LT1, L99 and LT4? As I recall, all L99's (4.3L) were 2 bolt. The LT1's were 'supposed' to all be 2 bolts except in Corvettes. And all LT4's were 4 bolts. Also if I remember right, the casting for all 5.7L gen 2's were the same number.

Gen 1s from 87-2002 were typically 2 bolt in everything but 1 ton trucks and corvettes. Not all post 87 motors were roller. Trucks had flat tappet till 95-96 but had provisions to use roller cams.
If you're looking specifically for a 4 bolt roller cam block, your best bet is a 95-2002 1 ton van. Oddly enough that's what I used in my 92. 880 and 638 casting numbers are what you're looking for but like 010 they are a mystery till the pan is dropped.

the 87 and later blocks are still "gen 1", since the "gen" thing didn't start until they needed a way to classify the new engines that came out in the Vettes in 97, so they called them "gen 3" and retroactively named the LT1/Lt4/L99 as "gen 2"..
