Car: 86' IROC
Engine: Supercharged 350
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 3.45
T56 swap - 3rd gen vs 4th gen pedals
So ive been doing alot of thinking in regaurds to the two pressure plates that ive had start rubbing on the fork recently. Ive allways wondered wtf causes it to just start doing it and its usually around the same time that the pressure plate give out, or the bearing breaks. Long story short is, how many of you use third gen pedals vs those of you who swapped 4th gen pedals and dont? Im rather currious to see the #'s. I think i may be over extending the pressure plate thus killing the bearing/bending the plate

When I put a new clutch in mine I had a knocking noise when I pushed the clutch pedal in all the way. Figured out it was the fork banging on the pressure plate - brand new clutch.
I then did the cavalier slave. I also looked at the pressure plate that came out of the car, and found it had the exact same wear pattern on it, it just wasnt nearly as severe and had apparently self-clearanced over the time it was in the car.

My Thirdgen has a T56 and Thirdgen pedals and 4th gen hydraulics. When it was first installed I used a factory stock PP and clutch disk with 2-piece RMS flywheel; No Problems - at all. When the Engine was converted to an LT1 I used a stock LT1 flywheel and an aftermarket Clutch. On the first start-up I almost crapped my pants when I heard grinding while the clutch was pushed to the floor. The fork must have traveled a little too far and ( I'm pretty sure ) it made contact with the replacement PP. Never heard that noise again after that first start-up and the clutch works just fine.
With my 95Z,..... I used all stock parts till the original clutch disc failed. Bought an aftermarket Clutch set-up and once it was installed the clutch would not disengage from the PP because the new disc was too thick. New parts that didn't fit - out of the box !! I didn't alter anything to "make it work",.. the car was mostly stock and I wasn't about to alter the fork throw to accommodate a badly designed clutch. After figuring out what the problem was, I pulled an old clutch disc from my scrap metal pile ( the used 1 that I had pulled out of the 84 ) then reinstalled all the old stock parts and everything fit fine and works as expected again.
When looking over the aftermarket clutch set-up it seemed that the new PP was a bit thinner than the original PP and the disc was considerably thicker than stock.
I could be wrong,... but I *think* the Thirdgen pedals have a bit more of a range that the 4th gen pedals......

This started popping up a few years ago when it happeend to me. I suddenly saw a lot of other people on here having the same problem.
I think they changed some spec on the pressure plate that wouldnt affect operation in a 4th gen, but happens to exceed what we can do with 4th gen hydraulics and 3rd gen pedals. And I think this happened about 5 years ago.

Im wondering if i can install a stop. Ive noticed recently, that if i push the clutch half way down the shifter slips in gear like butter compared to, at the floor where you can feel a suttle click into the next gear, which is why i mention this. Again, Im thinking that its being over extended with third gen pedals. Really currious to see if someone has ever had a set of 4th gen and 3rd gen pedals next to each other or atleast a measurement

Its a lot easier to get an adjustable master (Like Tick) or to remove yours andi nstall an adjustable turnbuckle on it.
It's going to shift easier without being fully disengaged, but it will wear out the synchros more. You want full disengagement under power if you care about longevity.
