TV Cable slack with QF Carb & Air Gap Intake
84 Bird, AFR Heads, Air Gap Intake rebuilt 5.7 and 700r4 tranny. I am able to adjust the TV Cable to WOT. However, when the throttle is at rest, there is 1/2" cable play in line. The Bird is at the paint shop (30 miles away) and I do not have access to take pictures, I have had the motor/tranny in the car for almost a year. Other than driving up the block once, it has been trailered everywhere for estimates, etc.I have not checked line pressure yet - I would like some thoughts on which direction to go with this. Prior to installing the new engine and trans the tranny up shifted and downshifted without issue. Thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated. Thx Byron

Re: TV Cable slack with QF Carb & Air Gap Intake
I can't say for sure, but it sounds like the throttle linkage ratio is off. IIRC, there are differences with aftermarket carb linkage and stock carbs. If you have the original carb, you could measure the attachment points of the tv cable and throttle cable versus the pivot point (throttle shaft). These measurements (ratio) should be the same or at least very close to each other from carb to carb. It sounds as if the distance from throttle shaft to tv cable is too great causing the attachment point to swing a greater distance than the tv cable has travel. HTH!

Re: TV Cable slack with QF Carb & Air Gap Intake
Bigal55... Here is what I perceive as a fix - it is about $170 bucks. Did not want to spend this if I didn't have to. I gave the 305 motor to a young man that blew his up - I never considered that the TV cable would be an issue. As I know didely about a 700r4 - I would appreciate a look and see what your thoughts are on this "fix". I would appreciate anyone else chiming in - I am sure I am not the first person to go through this... Thx byron

Depending on the Qjet (ie, not a factory CCC), you may need to correct the geometry of the linkage on the carburetor itself. If its an earlier, non CCC Qjet, chances are the linkages are configured to control a different transmission (like a Turbo 350\400). Swapping and/or replacing the linkages from the correct model of Qjet would solve this, otherwise I'm sure there's an aftermarket source of some sort to buy either replacement brackets or geometry correction brackets.

one of the best video's for explaining how to set up a tv cable correctly, IMO. explains a lot of good info.

Jorlain, Redneckjoe and bigal55. I have watched this info a handful of times. I know the cable is the one that came with the original tranny/engine/carb. I will make a trip to the body shop in the next few days and give it another go. I have added the Holley bracket as this gentlemen shows to do so hopefully I am not setting it correctly. Best regards and thank you.

Pancherj, I have a Quick Fuel 650 HP as a carb. I added the cable bracket 52126 by professional products. The bracket has the ability to change to several heights and distance from carb. It was bought via Amazon - thought it was the correct one - now, not so sure. Thoughts are appreciated. Byron

I'm not sure that cable bracket will cut it and you still need the geometry corrector that bolts to the carb linkage. I have a similar setup to yours. I used the CSR aluminum bracket (CSR 631R) and the TCI geometry corrector (TCI 376715). I had to fiddle with the CSR bracket a little to get the TV cable holder in the correct spot, but it worked fine. I am using the stock 1990 TPI throttle cable and TV cable.

Re: TV Cable slack with QF Carb & Air Gap Intake
DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR LIKE THAT!!!!!
You WILL burn the transmission up, probably in less than 100 miles.
www.tvmadeez.com should have what you need, or at least be able to point you in the right direction.

Re: TV Cable slack with QF Carb & Air Gap Intake
Sofakingdom - Pancherj - I have read some horror stories about the TV cable - I believe the mileage is less than 2 blocks since I installed the motor/tranny. I have trailered the car everywhere - which is a pain as I sold my trailer and now have to rent a trailer from a rental place that is very busy....
I am looking at the brackets as stated by Pancherj - will a TPI set up work on a carbed engine? I also failed to mention that I have a Holley geometry connector installed on the carb - the equivalent of the TCI 376715 you mentioned. I will try one more avenue before I go the tvmadeez.com route. If anyone can think of anything else please let me know - best regards, Byron

If you have the geometry corrector, then all you should need is an adjustable bracket so you can remove all of that initial slack from the TV cable. With less than 2 blocks of driving, the trans is probably okay (unless it was a 2 block burnout!!).
