1991 camaro won't start
Hi everyone, so I bought a 1991 camaro rs 3.1 v6 for 600$ It's not running but the body is ok, a little rust but the body looks good. It won't start. I charged the battery, replaced the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Fuel pressure is good. There is spark and it back fires a bit when trying to start. It seems like the timing chain jumped a couple of teeth. That's a huge job tho and was wondering if I might be missing something. I also sprayed starter fluid in the throttle body and it ran for 30 seconds like ****( misfiring, back firing and after firing). It scared me lol. Any suggestions would help. Thanks, Tim

check your spark plug wires to be sure they are in the correct order.
since starting fluid ignites, youre getting spark and that is good.
Check your fuel pressure. parts stores rent this setup if you dont have it. GM vehicles of this era have a problem with fuel pumps going out.
Thats about all i can say given the info presented. talk to the previous owner and get some more info. Do some (actually, do alot of it) reading on this site and lots of thinking before throwing money at your problems. And welcome to Thirdgen.

If you can talk to the PO it would really help to see what the history of the problem is. It does sound like a timing problem but it might be that spark plug wires were switched around when the spark plugs were replaced, a common mistake when they're not marked.

It was the timing chain. It was really loose and jumped. The chain damper was broken also. I Put the cam back in position, replaced the cam and crank sprockets and the chain. I'm putting it all back together now
