RPO N64 available in 91?
Hey guys, my car didn't come with a spare or a jack. Since I have a 1-LE, I would like to replace them with correct parts. I was looking in the Tech Data and saw that in 89 the 1-LE received an aluminum spare RPO code N64. Is my car supposed to have the aluminum spare or the standard "donut" that everyone else has? I don't have the RPO codes for my car, but I do know it was a G92/1LE optioned car.

The GM RPO code N64 (aluminum spare tire) is not serviced by GM. Or anyone else. Used is the only way to get them. I needed three for my cars, and was lucky enough to find them. One still had the original inflation cannister attached.

I have some new information on this interesting topic.
According to Goodyear, "the last use of the aluminum inflateable spare tire on production units (vehicles) was in 1988. From 1989-1992 a stamped steel version was used.
My research has indicated that this is in fact the case. I have seen many cars w/N64 spare tire option during the past year. First recorded use I have seen for myself was in 1985 (fisrt year for IROCs and 16" wheels). A 1989 IROCZ that I examined still had its original steel inflateable spare tire, and carried the N64 option on the RPO tag.

On TTA list, we went round and round with this. Everybody is supposed to have an aluminum spare but it looks like a painted steel one, not the nice aluminum one from previous years.
Somebody finally tried a magnet and it wouldn't stick. So at least the 1LE cars got this "ugly" aluminum spare. I would imagine they changed it because of the bigger brakes?

Every 1LE car I have seen has had the N64 inflatable spare tire. Which was steel and painted black. The tire size for this tire was 195/75D15. The aluminum spare tire you refer to is 195/75D14. They also have different sized (capacity) inflation cannisters. Tires and inflation cannisters are get pretty hard to find. Especially in good condition.
Every '89-'92 N64 equipped car I have seen has had the 15" steel inflatable spare tire. The steel example in my collection was manufactured in January of 1988. Presumably for 1989 model year production.
If the car was built with a posi rear and 16" wheels. then it was automatically equipped with N64. I do not know if the N64 was available as a customer ordered RPO.

I know my wheel is not steel but looks just like the regular steel one. If not the magnet test, the weight test would tell you.
A wheel dated Jan 88 would be for an 88 model year. Maybe starting in June would be for 89.
I know on my car, all the dated parts are usually a month from completion date. Car was built in May and most parts have April dates.

This board is great! I thought to myself, "these can't all be wrong". So I went and checked the example in my collection, and sure enough, it is aluminum.
The change must have been made at the 1989 model year.
As a result "I R a litle bit smartr".

My 90 GTA also has the painted aluminum spare. Not long after I got my car,I came out of the bank to find my back tire had gone flat.It turned out to be a bad valve stem, anyways I proceeded to dig out the spare and jack that looked like it had never been out of the car.Being unfamiliar with the can and stuff I'm like WTF is this. After a few minutes I had it all changed and used the compressed air can had I known at the time that you can't get them anymore I never would have used it!What really sucks is that I was not far from home and it was the middle of the day and the car was in a safe place. In other words, there were plenty of other things I could have done to remedy the situation.Oh well,it's not like the car is all original or anything but I still wish I hadn't emptied that can!

I called the dealer about getting it recharged and they said they dont do that because the cannister is a hazzard in the car or some crap.Maybe I will just get one from Classic Industries since the lable on mine is kinda messed up anyway.
