17" x 10" wheels in the back.. lotta questions

I think this is the size I want to go with for the rear. Tire size 255/45ZR17. The only thing is, I don't know how to determine if a certain rim will fit or not, without sticking out too far or rubbing something in the well. How do I figure this out without having the rims in hand? Also, for anyone running 17s, what width do you have up front? I'm thinking of sticking with 8", but has anyone gone up to 9" without problems? Can the car be lowered at all after this (future plans for 1" drop all around)?

Its your car. The wheel wells should be big enough all around. If you think it looks good, then it doesnt matter what others have. Go with the size of rims you want.

I am running 275/40/R17's all around with a 2" drop. I do have rubbing issues up front with the 9" rims. I am still working on that though.

11" rims out back is possible with some cutting, banging, and relocation. Check out www.ws6.com for details on that.

that sure seems like a lot of work to make clearance in the rear...but seems like its well worth it....those big tires look great back there...think its possible on a thirdgen? I would assume so...hmm...ideas

I have 18 x 8.5’s in the front with 245/40-18’s and in the rear I run 18 x 10.0 with 295/35-18’s. The only major modifications were beating the sh*t out of the inner fender panels and cutting and rolling the rear quarters. Trust me its well worth it!

OK, am I doing something wrong here? The tire measurements are wrong on either my end or yours. If I'm correct, shouldn't 245/40-18's be used on 9.5" rims? And 295/35-18's should be on 11.5" rims?

This is the equation I'm using:
mm / 25.4 = inches

or

295 / 25.4 = 11.6

nope.

ive got 17x9.5's (275/40's) up front and 17x11's (315/35's) in back and have a 1.5" drop (eibach prokit). all i had to was hammer out the fenders and roll the lip also. im thinking of trying to squeeze 335's in back but i dont know if i want to hammer it out more yet...

Right On 5L! As far as maximum sizes go 285 will tuck nicely in the front with the same modifications and a 335 will tuck with a wide body conversion which basically flaring the quarters or rounding out the outer lips (body work is necessary).

OK, now I have to start all over again. Someone explain to me the tire measurements, cause on tirerack.com they tell you to divide the first number (255) by 25.4 to get the width in inches (~10").

To be honest with you, I liked the wheel and tire combination so I was willing to do whatever it took. These wheels were originally designed for a BMW fitment. I had to have custom spacers made for the front (8mm), seal the center cap to the wheel, and remove my grease caps to get the front wheels to seat properly. As for the back I run (12mm) spacers but that’s only because I was obsessed with making the rear wheels flush with the quarters. Now I was in the wheel business back then and had both time and plenty of wheel and tire combinations to play with. So that’s how I eventually ended up with the sizes I have now. Even though the front will tolerate a 285 I run a conservative 245 because it makes the *** end look wider going down the street. My recommendation is a 9” wheel with a 275 all the way around. Staggering sizes looks bitchin but remember you won’t be able to rotate anymore. Good Luck!

I still need to understand how the tiresizes work. Apparently, I got it all wrong (along with tirerack.com, if you're correct). Someone please explain the tire measurements.

tire sizing

you are correct about the 25.4=1", however the measurement that refers to is the section width of the treadpattern, not reccommended rim width. fyi, a stock iroc rim is 16x8, mounted on 245/50/r16's. generally, you can fit up to a 285 on an 8" rim, but you start getting into the rounded tire sidewalls, bulging out from therim. to keep yourself in the square section, tryi and keep about 1.5" difference between rim size and tread width, particularly with shorter sidewalls. on a 17x8.5, use a 245 or 255, conmsidering the -45 series sidewalls. on a 17x10, to keep the square look, youll have to stay in the 305 range, and to keep stock circumference, youre looking at 305/35/r17, expensive tire. the front, you can use 245/45/r17, and those will fit under the fenders. the rears might require work to fit under the well. to keep a 10 inch tread all around, you could use 245/45/r17 on a 17x8.5 rim with no problems. hope that helps.

I could be wrong but the tread pattern on his tires look like a brigstone, am I right? they could possibly be a toyo proxys but I doubt it it does look more like a brigstone potenza

Take a look at this image...I increased the brightness, cropped the photo, and rotated it 90 degrees CCW:

Do you remember what backspacing you had front and back? Can you post some pics of your wheels? Thanks

would there be any interest in a 17x8.5" wheel with a 56mm offset?

I might have a set available, or just a pair??

Tyre Sizes

275/40/17:

275 x .4 x 2 divide by 25.4 + 17" = 25.66" wheel

215/65/15:

215 x .65 x 2 divide by 25.4 + 15" = 26.00" wheel

I have an 82z28 with 18" wheels, currently running 245/40/18's all the way around. I was wondering what size rears I can run without making any other adjustments. Also how much would have to be done to get 305/45/18 nitto drags to fit. Any recomendations on a good tire for traction? Also from the pic doesn't it appear that I would have enough fender clearence to run wider tires. One thing I am worried about is the clearence on the inside of the tire/wheel with the inner fender but I don't care if the tires/wheels stick out past the fenders if they clear. Any help would be great. Thanks

245/40-18's can be used on rim width range of 8"- 9 1/2". The recommended use is 8.5". That is straight from five different performance tire manufacturers specs. BFG, Kumho, Pirelli, Bridgestone, & Yokohama. Pirelli actually stated 8"- 10".

I'm getting close to needing new tires in the next 6 months. I am currently looking towards 18" Irocs to replace my current '87 16" Irocs. The only problem is they are only offered in an 8" width. I need to locate any machine shop that specilizes in widening rims. I will be looking to go the 8" in front but want 9 1/2" in the rear. I love my single groove Irocs and want to keep that look, only larger and wider. Anyone know of a shop in So. Cal that specializes in this?

Goose Help me !

I need help I need the make and manufacturer of the rims you use on your car 1990 LS1 drift Camaro. I have been competing in drifting events for over 2 years now and the stock rims do not cut it. Need to run 255 or up to 275 X 18" front and in the rear it has to be at least 275 to 295 we will try different tire combinations.
