Performance Ignition Coil Info Wanted

1992 Camaro RS convertible with the 305 TBI

I was comparing engine bays with my '83 T/A with 305 4 bbl, and noticed that the distributors and coils were different. Initially I was thinking about using the Hypertech coil (in cap) on the Camaro until I noticed that the coil is remotely mounted. So that idea has been scrapped and the T/A is left unmolested!

Is there a performance coil for my '92 Camaro w/ 305 TBI?

Is this anything like the DIS coil packs found on some GM cars?

Thanks!!

I saw that one just a minute ago and then I found this unit by Hypertech. This is more in line with what I want........

Thanks for the reply......they seem few and far between on this topic.........or maybe it's just my breath?

HYP-4054

$71.95

Vendor: Hypertech Inc.
Product Line: Hypertech Coils
Material: Alkyd
Finish: Black

40 percent more power making voltage

Chevrolet/GMC/Pontiac: 1987-95 truck, 305-454 TBI, 1987-92 Camaro/Firebird 305/350 TPI, 1987-93 Camaro/Firebired/Caprice 305/350 TBI, HEI, cap, rotor, coil kit

Your stock HEI coil starts progressively dropping voltage at 4,500 rpm. The Hypertech Power Coil is designed to give you a steady, hard-hitting spark throughout your car's rpm range with 40 percent more voltage over stock-53,000 V compared to the OEM's 38,000 V. The result is more power and a complete fuel burn that may give you an extra five horsepower.

Sold individually.

Go to www.performancedistributors.com

Buy their coil, and while you at it, their ignition module....just don't use it if you run an aftermarket ignition box.....it doesn't need any help firing the plugs

BTW.....the Hypertech coil in cap for HEI is MADE by DUI, at the website mentioned above.

Remotely Mounted Coil

HYP-4054 is hypertech's remotely mounted coil kit for my '92 RS 305 TBI. The coil in cap (HEI) on my '83 T/A is what started me wondering about all of this in the first place. I wanted to swap them out and found that it was not a straight forward swap.

Tell me more about the ignition module. Is that something that is going to make a difference on the street? Or is it just more money out of pocket?

Thanks!

I"ve used DUI Stuff for awhile now. I've NEVER had to use an ignition box with their stuff either.

The distributor in my IROC was NEW. I replaced the ignition module and the coil / cap / rotor with the DUI stuff. The old parts, like mentioned, were NEW w/ less than 1k miles on 'em when replaced.

Differences? Easier starting...catches on the first twist, start quicker.

Gas mileage definitely picked up. The biggest difference was the smoother idle ( actually had to idle the car down after the swap ) and top end pick up seems a bit affected as well.

Re: Performance Ignition Coil Info Wanted

#4054 so nobody has had any issue with this coil kit? I saw a review on summit about something do do with the gapping, and a member on third gen said his coil would not start the car when he installed it but the old one would work,,,,?
