stupid Mr. Gasket junk!

Tonight I went to install my Mr. Gasket 2661 water neck onto my HSR intake base. It didn't fit! A closer inspection revealed that one of the bolt holes on the water neck was off by a bit. I could put one bolt in and tighten it, but then the other bolt wouldn't line up with the threaded hole on the manifold.

I tried the water neck on a different intake manifold and had the same problem, so the hole was definitely drilled incorrectly.

Anyone else had this problem? I think I can just elongate the one bolt hole a bit and it will fit - but I shouldn't have to. I should probably just get another water neck.

Thanks Mr. Gasket!

nothing aftermarket will always fit 100% like factory....that's just how things go. but if you wanna return do it, try another one. I've never had a problem with them not lining up and i've bought 5 or 6 of them.

I fully agree that aftermarket parts are not always a direct fit. But I still think a new water neck should bolt on without modification.

I spent a little time enlarging the bolt hole and now it fits. I haven't bought anything made by Mr. Gasket in a while. Now I remember why.

I've bought a few Mr. G dipsticks and THEY ARE WORTHLESS! The last one that I installed in my 400 sbc was to big and WOULD NOT go in with a light tapping so I tryed tapping that little edge at the end of the tube with a screw driver and BFH (yeah I know ) ,one oh so light tap and I made a hole in the ******* thing . I pulled the tube back out and carefully brazed the hole shut (in the Mr. G made, chintzee garbage pot metal)and brazed all the way around the tube to give it some strength and then I pounded that puppy in. What a mess.

I've read a lot of people on here having to mod their HSR to fit the runners on, so it might not be the water neck that's the problem.

i agree that mr gasket makes poor quality parts. have you ever noticed how their stuff is milled wrong? i cant tell you how many times i had to bust out the sander to sand down the cornors of something i bought made by them. and that cheap crome they put on? oh thats lovely...i stay away unless the speed shop has no other brands that make the parts they do.

I hope you didn't use a o-ring seal that is provided to seal that! I did the first time on my hsr and it leaked.

Did you try leaving the one bolt loose before you tried to put the other one in/ I assume so...but just wanted to check

I'll second the crappy dipstick comment.. Dont use em!! I used one and all the chrome peeled off the stick. Wonder where the flakes of that ended up?

(to fit the runners on?)

Anyway...I will let you know how my mr. gasket neck fits when I install mine this week on my new HSR. Also, I can tell you for sure that I wont be using any freakin o-rings!! I also bought the hose for the radiator Doug Flynn listed. It just doesnt look right to me. Too many curves. When my intake gets here on Wednesday from Summit I will look at it though. P.S. Yes I bought my HSR from Summit...they price matched Thunders prices.

Those o-ring water necks usually work great the first time you put them on. If you change thermostats a lot or remove your water neck several times for any other reason though, watch out! I've had a couple of the o-ring necks and what I noticed is that the o-ring gets flattened out after a while and then they leak when you reinstall them. I ended up going back to the good old flat ones with a gasket. One other tip: If you get a flat style one that's chromed, make sure to lightly sand off the chrome plating on the gasket surface. I've seen those leak too because the rtv wouldn't stick to the chrome plating very well. When it comes to sealers, I swear by permatex "right stuff" in the can. It's more expensive than the tube stuff, but worth every penny in my opinion!

So, on your regular paper gasket water outlet, do you reuse the paper gasket and scrape off the old rtv?? Probably not--you get a NEW one.. The o-ring water outlets work great and seal great.. I've used them on several applications.. Typically you can reinstall them at least once without replacing the o-ring, sometimes twice...

Buy a NEW o-ring...

This is not an uncommon problem.

The HSR doesnt play friendly at all with water necks.

We have to lay down a big fat thick bead of RTV everytime we take the neck off the HSR.

The HSR setup is generic and takes some love to work with our rigs, be carefull with your hose clamps also, they can and hang the TB open if not positioned properly.

And for everyone with tears in their eyes yall need to wake up and stop snivling, I have to say that the majority of aftermarket parts from ANY company need some love to fit properly.

Rule of thumb: The more love you give it the better it will work out for you!
