B&M Ratcheting Floor Shifter

Got to say it works great. Instructions and diagrams were straight forward and it looks damn good in the car. Not to mention the car is now funner to drive.

Only down side is you have to purchase a relay for the neutral safety switch ($10.00)-RadioShack and the shifter to floor bolts dont quite reach far enough through the trans tunnel. Other than that its sweet.

Nice indeed, good job

I have the megashifter too and I really don't like it but apparently it's some sort of 'must' for racing. I did better times with my stock shifter. A drawback that nobody ever mentions about these things is that they are TIGHT- and hard to pull down in to low 1. I have had mine for over a year now and it still takes 2 hands to pull it all the way back- even a guy has to use 2 hands with these things.

Plus, with my TPI and 700 transmission, it would change gears on it's own going down the track sometimes.

Anyway- it looks cool so that's a good point. Here's a pic of mine now.

I second that! You gotta get the cable routing right, especially w/ the B&M cable. It also gets tight if you haven't gotten the transmission end of the cable adjusted right on.

when I installed one into a former stick car in 93 I wondered if a stock cable setup would have worked thanks for confirming my suspicions.

The included cable bound up and was too stiff after it got melted. I made the mistake of replacing it with a stiffer race cable, big mistake. it made things worse and eventually ruined the shifter.

I bet the stock cable is much gentler.

does anyone know if the Megashifters still come with all the stuff for TH350 use?

mine came with the option to use it on a 3 speed.....the only thing to swap it to a 4 speed was to take out the little e-clip and then it would rachet down to the lowest gear....

Maybe that's part of Jamsgirl's problem... I've never seen one that was hard to pull into first (not nearly hard enough for two hands at least)

and thanks for the info 84customZ28, I've been looking for a set of those seats since you posted.

AM I the only one who thinks the Mega shifter looks like crap in our cars?

Looks to big and generic in the console of these cars.

Not to mentioin, for 30 bucks, you can get a gate for your stock shifter, to make it work much better.

I prefer gates over rechets any day. As do most serious racers.

Ge to the digs some time, look at the cars in the pits, most will likely have a Pro Stick in them, which it a gate shifter.

.
Sound's like your cable isn't adjusted right. I think you don't have enough cable when 1st is selected. The gear selector on the trans is already to the stop, and won't go any farther, but you've gotta really stretch the shifter to get it to detent on first. it shouldn't be any harder to ratchet 2nd to 1st than from N to D or any other of the ratchet stops. On my shifter, the 3rd gear setup was nothing more than a 1/4-20 nut and bolt working as a stop for the ratchet. It wasn't an e-clip.

I'm gonna quote the original instructions, as best I remember them:
* With the shift cable unhooked from the transmission (gear selector), move the shifter to park, and manually move the gear selector to the park detent.
*Adjust the fittng on the cable untill it slips easily in and out of the hole in the gear selector lever. Do not leave the fitting in the selector lever.
*Move the shifter through all the postitons, to 1st gear. Manualy move the gear selector to 1st gear.
*Adjust the fitting as before.
*Repeat untill the cable fitting slips in and out of the hole in the gear selector in both Park and 1st.

Two Notes:
1. This is a job made much easier if you have a helper. One person in the car to move the shifter, and one under the car, doing the adjustments.

2. The shifter kit comes with a dogleg gear selector lever, to replace the straight factory piece. This moves the clever in to better alignment with the cable and mounting bracket. If you're using the factory bracket, you are going to have a more difficult time getting the adjustment right, and probably experience more binding.

Stalin05: I didn't have any problems wiith that cable being too long, but it was a PITA to get the gear indicator to line up with the numbers on the plate.

Have you ever seen a stock Pontiac shifter? Talk about generic...Blech..

Who makes a gate plate for stock GM auto shifters? Not trying to bash, just never seen one. (I'm trying to broaden my horizons)
I prefer gates over rechets any day. As do most serious racers.
Most serious racers also prefer transmissions other than the 700-R4 that most of us have. I, for one appreciate my overdrive.

it should have came with a black metal piece..not plastic. I believe the chrome plate your referring to are the models that aren't made for our consoles..

Yep. They give you a metal adapter that lays on top of your existing shifter. You have to cut the sides of your old plastic piece but its no biggie. BTW ive recieved nothing but compliments from those who have seen the shifter in person.

I've had mine for a couple years and no complaints --no problems--works fine. Only thing is the reverse lock out lever broke and had to replace it.

Glad to see/hear that so many of you are satisified with your Megashifters. I wish I could have stayed with the stock shifter to be honest. I really only wanted the ratchet action for drag racing, and I purchased a Hurt Dual Gate II only to find out what a POS that shifter is. So then I purchased the Megashifter. I really do not like the shifter, yeah it looks pretty but the damn shifter T handle always comes loose, I have a bit of the binding as well, and if the the shift indicator works then it usually has knocked the bulb out its socket, or if the bulb stays in place the indicator will not show the proper gear because it is caught on the bulb I have a friend that works for B&M's design team, he told me to rip it all out and do a warrenty swap. Again I am very glad to hear that so many are happy with it, I like the look overall

Handle coming off--super glue gel--the thick stuff--IT WILL NOT COME OFF--but when U need it to come off for service, a big pair of pliars or crescent wrench with a rag to protect it, and U will be able to break the super glue and unscrew it like normal.

I do have a question about these thought. Mine was already installed when I bought my IROC. Is it supposed to keep from going into neutral with th lockout? Mine U can slap it from drive to neutral without using the lockout. It will not go any further, and U do have to have it in drive to use lockout to go into R or Park. Is that the way they all work?

i have this shifter. when i first bought my 89 rs with the 2.8L off of my father 5 years ago, i thought that the shifter was the coolest thing. it looked sporty and shifted nicely.

i did a motor swap 2 years ago in that car and shortly after, the cable stretched so far i couldn't get it into or out of any gear. i drove home in 3rd from the movie theatre i was at when it happened.

i wrecked that car shortly after i replaced the cable with a new one, which worked OK but i never could get it adjusted well. i either had park, but couldn't ratchet all the way into 1st, or i could go to 1st, but no park....carried around a piece of wood to stop the car, cause i wouldn't give up first. LOL!

when i did the motor swap in the car i am driving right now(87), i kept the stock shifter. i thought it was so nice. i'd never driven a camaro with a stock shifter in it since my father had put the megashifter in the car(89) long before i thought about buying it from him. the stock shifter worked great. always had park, always had 1st, and always knew what gear i was in.

i did a converter swap shortly after that. i was doing great with it all by myself till i started to put the tranny back into place. the tranny slipped off of the jack and broke the shifter cable. (stupid me, thought i could get away without disconnecting anything from the tranny). so i throw the b&m in with the nearly brand new cable i had bought for it some 1 1/2 years earlier and went on. since having shoulder surgery and still not being able to get that stupid thing adjusted correctly, the new 1990 rs that i am building will receive a stock shifter with some upgrades to make it work better and look nicer. no more B&M for me.

i also had plenty of problems with the handle never staying on and the electrical hookups for the brake lights and nss took me nearly 3 hrs to get all working correctly like they were supposed to. it's been a mess overall. no reason to buy it really, other than it looking cool. with a 700r4, the stock shifter does just as good, if not better.

model number

Just wondering what the model number is for the B&M shifter that fits our cars, and how much it costs. If you have any links, they'd be helpful too.

Thanks

Everybody has their own opinions about what looks good and what does not. That's why they offer so many diffeent types of cars--options nd colors.

Me personally, I like how the shifter looks!

Anybody?

I do have a question about these thought. Mine was already installed when I bought my IROC. Is it supposed to keep from going into neutral with th lockout? Mine U can slap it from drive to neutral without using the lockout. It will not go any further, and U do have to have it in drive to use lockout to go into R or Park. Is that the way they all work?

Street bandit?

Does any one have a street bandit? they make one for a 700-R4.
I got rid of my stock center console & am making one out of Aluminum just for the emergency brake & arm rest. I have a contact thats getting me a part number for one thats carbon fiber with a carbon fiber handle that has a button for nitros on top. I was never a fan of that center console. The one I build Will have my transmisson temp gauge in it.

I know what you mean. I loved my stock shifter with the white macewen gauge inlay. It looked and worked cherry. Until I tried to manually shift at racing. With my boosted application the trans doesnt shift late enough. So the ratcheting shifter allows me to not miss a gear and pull as far as I need to. I use to hate racing and shifting from first to 3rd. What a riot. LOL.
