Pete jackson gear drive?
Anyone running one? Was thinking about switching over to one because I kinda like the whine they make, sounds like a blower. But are there any benifits to running one? Anyone have any experience with them? Will they outlast a timing chain? Will my timing be more precise with one or is a timing chain better?

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
I'm running run in my motor, it has advantages over timing chains like you've asked. #1 key factor, No chain to be stretched, therefor timing isnt affected by it. I absolutely love the whine it produces, i just wish it was alot louder. So people put one on and then hate it, so they take it off. Louder is always better though. IMO

I think they make a quite one too? I would choose the noisy one myself, I heard one on a 71 camaro going down the road before and the thing just sounded so tough!

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
yeah definatly. i got one on my motor and no complaints either. They make a "quiet" and "whiney" version..... I just wish they had a "REALLY FUCCKKKIN Whiney" version

I to love the whine they make. I have been running a loud one for more than a few years. I think you get a more of a precise timing with a gear than you do with a chain.
Just my 2 cents

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
I had one on my 1980 Camaro and ran it for 12 years without problem but there are a couple of things you need to watch -
1) Don't try to run one with a EFI computer that has a knock-sensor the noise will read as detonation and retard your ignition.
2) They do transfer crank harmonics directly to your valvetrain and can shorten the lifespan of your cam, lifters, and rockers. The more power you make the worse this effect is (my car made only about 300 hp). This is why Nextel cars use Jesel timing belts.
If you plan to run one make sure you use a top-quality balancer

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
There are no gains to be had over a good chain. They're not intended for street use due to the added harmonics in the motor, as well as the lesser life expectancy.
- They are only a detriment to hp on a motor that doesn't need it.

There's entirely too many people who havent had any problems, and a single one I know of that has. I wouldnt worry about it with a PJ Quiet drive. Noisy drive... you're on your own. But, there's a member here using one with no problems.

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
I had a Quiet Pete Jackson installed on my mostly stock 5.7 while it was apart last summer. The back of my car makes plenty of noise, why not a little in the front (minus those darn fans)? I would have went with the loud but I didn't want it to whine as much as the people who don't like them. :P So I am really happy with it. No known knock issues, nor did I find anyone on these boards who had a knock issue when I searched last summer. Keep the car in first in a parking garage for the full effect!

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
A magazine tested chains, belt's and gear drives awhile back and found almost no difference, they even advanced and retarded the cam timing 4 or more degrees and found little difference, so it's up to you, I personally think that when I hear a blower, I want to SEE a blower, not just a noisy engine with a hidden noise maker. A good tru-roller chain is the way to go.

- I realize you're just quoting a mag test though.

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
A cheap non-roller chain elongates over time because the pivot points between the links wear. Only a few thou each, but over the length of the entire chain it starts to add up. A good double roller chain will last as long as a gear drive.

Cool, I'm not knockin on you Apeiron, Thats just the way i've learned. Basically its the same thing, if the pivot points wear the chain appears to "stretch.

Re: Pete jackson gear drive?
I am running the "quiet" gear set on my mostly stock 350 and it doesn't affect the knock sensor. It is pretty loud though for the so called quiet one, which I have a feeling may get old after a while. Aside from that, if you like the noise, go for it...if you don't, stick with a good chain. Chances are you won't see the day either wear out on whatever motor you're putting them on...
