Transmission mount Energy Suspension
Hello guys,
i have a stock Z28 1991 5.7 (with automatic of course) and i need to replace my transmission mount (i have change it last time 3000 miles ago but i think the garage use a low price item and now it's broken again)
i want to put a polyurethane transmission mount like this one :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Energ...spagenameZWD1V
does this item can fit on my car please ? do i change other things by the way (crossmember ?)
pic underneath mycar
Energy Suspension 3-1108G GM Transmission Mount, Black
right reference for my car ? do the color make anything to the mount (i mean red is more strong than black for example ?)
thanks a lot for your info guys
See u
Tof
PS : i forgot to add, here the mail i have received from energy suspension, this is why i ask your opinion guys
3.1108G black or 3.1108R red is correct but you must check the height to see if it matches your stock mount as it is too tall in many F body applications

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
I installed the exact same one in my car. Works like a champ, if you take the cross member down remember that the bolts that hold it to the fram only get torqued to 35ft-lbs and you won't have near as much trouble as I did

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
I put one in my 88 IROC and I had a very bad vibration.I put a prothane polly mount in and it solved my vibration. The energy susp mount was def to tall for me.Oh I also took the plate off and still had a vibration.

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
That's probably the vibration in my car too then. I used an Energy suspension mount because the rubber broke. Maybe I could put in a prothane later.

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
i found that the energy suspension piece raised the trans a little because of the preload plate, the mount in general lasted me less than 8k miles, and began to fail, i now have a prothane one, using 2 bolts to attach to the crossmember. the prothane mount is designed better IMO

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
I have that mount, works great. Has close to 20,000 kms on it. I put the poly torque arm mount on at the same time. Made a big difference. It is taller but shouldn't affect anything. You can always put washers between the crossmember and the frame to space the crossmember down.

the prothane one is a bit softer, they do recommend if you do a poly trans mount to also do the motor mounts

harder causes more vibrations, energy suspension is a bit harder (but not like a solid)

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
Did you use the shim? I would compare your stock mount to the ES mount. If you use you the shim and don't need it causes vibrations. I think it changes the pinon angle. On my 89 T/A auto I didn't use the shim but on my 00' Firehawk 6 speed I did. You are going to feel more vibration regardless because the mount is stiffer and transmits more drivetrain vibration.
I did not know the prothane mount is softer. Thats good to know.
Good luck.

you are supposed to enlarge the hole but you can thread it in but run the risk of marring the threads. I haven't yet though.

i had to drill the crossmember on mine. it was a tight fit, i wasn't taking the chance of messing up the bolt.

When I had the es mount all I did was filed my crossmember a little bit.I must say so far I really love the prothane mount. Also they say on the es mount if you dont use the pre load plate you will damage the mount.

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
Since there are two different types, I wonder if the cross member we're discussing is the same--or if type makes a difference:

the energy suspension mount was put in both the manual and auto trans camaros i have. some models require you to use the plate, some dont. if there is ibration, remove the plate.

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
I had a hydraulic mount on my 5 speed, it was firm yet very smooth, best performing mount I've had, but I doubt would hold up under big power (had 125k when it went though). Swapped to a different cross member with these block style mounts. The oil-filled mount was much better, but too rare and expensive (and probably weak) to keep.
After the swap the ES mount caused vibrations for me even without the plate. I didn't know about the Prothane mount. The stock V8 mount I'm using feels soft and will let my stick float around a bit under a heavy foot and on rough roads. I will have to try the Prothane.
I'm sure if your car is lowered or you have worn springs you can get away with the taller and stiffer ES mount. My car is just too poised on the rear springs, there is a fair amount of pinion angle that is too exaggerated with that mount.

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
If all three mounts have collapsed and a new trans mount is installed, would the tail shaft be raised enough to be the root of the problem?

Re: Transmission mount Energy Suspension
I've always found the vibration issue interesting. Energy Suspension claims their mount is 1.932 tall (with the pre-load plate). I measured an OE rubber mount from AutoZone only hours ago. It measured 1.921. The difference would seem to be insignificant. A third from Advance Auto was 1.818.

Also, as I said before, since your ride height will drastically change per car is a factor. And I'm sure plenty of people are sitting on bad u-joints or a steep pinion angle that just can't handle this last straw... lol
