I always thought you needed a new chip whenever you cammed your engine, but I was at a website the other day and they advertised a cam you could put into an LS1 engine and you didn't need to do any computer tuning. Is there one available for TPI motors that I wouldn't need a new chip for?

The only thing to ask in, why? A cam that requires no to little tuning is not going to provide very good results. Why go through all the labor and headaches just to add a few horsepower? Go with something that matches the rest of your parts, add a new set of heads and an intake and do things right the first time. Depending on current mods, your money is well spent in other places.

I kind of figured as much... don't know much about cams, that's why I asked. And the reason I asked about just cams was because I don't have the money to get a good set of heads and intake right now. Looks like I might just end up installing that NOS kit I bought... *crosses fingers engine doesn't blow up*

He's right. Dont bother with a camshaft swap on a stock engine with stock heads. For one, the stock heads limit you to about .470" lift, and two, the stock heads flow is terrible, and wont take much advantage of the camshaft. We recommend doing heads and cam and intake at the same time.
I was able to use a stock chip with a ZZ4 camshaft, but I also used L98 aluminum heads with Manley 22410-16 springs and 23652-16 retainers to handle the extra lift.

we never got it on a dyno but i have a 08-302-8 (480/480 210/220 112) in my 89 formula LB9 and my car wasnt even tuned and he ran pretty strong with mine. i had a lil more done, ported heads, opened MAF, air foil, EGR walls gound down, roller tip rockers,0.08 shave on the head, 0.20 gasket. im at 10.41 comp.
now that im tuned that would change. but it would put enough punch into the car to notice esp if you have a decent exhaust. thats one of the best mods for a TPI car.
if you do runners and siamese the plenum keeping in mind the velocity fractor you can do pretty good and have plenty of HP. about a yr ago GMHTP did an article on cars that did only outside mods. 2 of the cars were third gens , one running a pizza box and the other a stock TPI. they were both into the
12s. but they did have SFCs, exhaust, and other stuff but the motors were all stock internally. the pizza bx car was a tad slower being it moves the RPM range up and takes away torqe.

Re: Any cams out there that you don't need to burn a new chip for?
I have headers on my car and most of the pipes I need to finish my exhaust in my garage and I would like to cam my car, but a friend of mine had a pretty convincing argument for hooking up my NOS the other day. All he said was "C'monnn!" lol. I already have a walbro pump, afpr, and 30# injectors because I've been thinking of doing nitrous for a while. I think I'm going to pick up a digital 6 and sell my 6al so I can retard the timing when I spray. Thanks though guys. I think I'm going to wait until I'm done with college to build a real engine lol.

Pop in the giggle gas man. It'll give you the excitement you are looking for right now and you've already spent the money on it anyway.
Yeah, it isn't "real" horsepower but wtf cares right?!
