Cold air intakes, help needed
I am looking for a cold air intake for 1992 camaro v6 3.1L. I would like to put as little effort into it as possible. As we all know, they have oddly shaped throttle bodies. Any suggestions?

leave the factory stuff on the T-body and change or modify the factory filter box. Simple and free.

Re: Cold air intakes, help needed
Ty, do u think it would work if I used cut the sides( except for a couple of support places) and put a wire mesh around it? If not, what would be a more simple way to do it?

Look on Rockauto.com and see if they still have any of the Fram Air Hog high flow washable air filters left. I bought a pair for about $4 each from them, and they out-flow the K&N filters. Other than that, leave your stock air box alone. It's already a cold air setup from the factory.

Re: Cold air intakes, help needed
I am aware of this, I am looking for a freer flowing system and would like some suggestions on this so that it would run smoother and more efficiently. I am just curious on what others have done and would like to know how they did it.

Re: Cold air intakes, help needed
You can just buy a silicone smooth bellow for the throttle body and a Turbo clamp. It works perfectly.

Cheaper than the silicone is my solution - Black rubber smooth rubber coupling from the plumbing section of my local Lowe's. Cost $4, fits my TPI perfectly.

@ttop350 I dont know anything about the 3.1 but I was just suggesting that he might try making his own instead of purchasing one because I made my own quite easily. I suppose its not "as little effort as possible" but why trade functionality for simplicity? Password just get an open element filter if you want the easiest route possible takes 30 seconds to install.

A cold air intake will only give you like 2% gain on hp, you'd be better off just sticking an air filter directly on the throttle body. If you want a ram air though, I'd make or buy something like the 305 H.O. motors have.

Re: Cold air intakes, help needed
After I did the rebuild on my 2.8, bored and stroked (to 3.1), ported and polished, cam, headers, etc. blah, blah, blah, for fun I set up a series of thermocouples inside the engine compartment. I had left off the fender liner on the passenger side.
Anyway, long story short, at idling speeds (in stop and go traffic), there was a great temperature difference between the CAI and the rest of the engine compartment - CAI definitely cooler. At highway speeds, little or no difference.
If I can, I'll post the Excell spreadsheets. I did one run in to work (cold morning temp from home, highway run to stop-and-go commute traffic) and one run to home in the afternoon (stop-and-go to highway run).
To tell you the truth, just remove or cut a hole in the passenger side fender liner to improve air flow past the radiator. That seems the most logical - at least for the V6 as there is a good gap between the radiator and radiator support.
If you want to build a CAI, PVC and 30 min. should do.

Re: Cold air intakes, help needed
on the stock 87 350 TPI throttle body what size connector is needed? it is oval so a true circular measurement is impossible for me (not that smart), also would you recommend 3" or 4" tubing?

3" rubber plumbing coupling, available at hardware/home supply stores. This is what I have on my '85 Corvette TPI throttle body.
