Pepboys is......

I went to Pep boys to get my car aligned. I was there around 7:30 in the morning, and they were not open yet, but they had some kind of a form/envelop called,” early bird". I fill out the form, put my key in it and drop it off in the box. At 2:00 I went back to Pep boys to see if my car was ready. I told the guy at Pep boy that I dropped off my car in the morning and I was wondering if my car was ready, so the guy looks in the computer and he could not find anything. Yup you guessed it; it came out to be that no one checked the early bird box at all. the guy told me oh I am sorry I was not here in the morning, but I get your car ready at 5:00 any way I come back to Pep boy around 5:30 and I found another guy working behind the desk and I asked him if my car was ready. He told me that they can not do it today and it will take till the next day(what kind of BS is that, car alignment does not take that long to do???), so I asked him where is the manager and he answered me I am the manager, and he said he is sorry about that, and guess what he offered me a $10 off Wow they gave me $10 off for wasting 9 hours, and on the other hand this Pep boys was about 50 miles away from my house. So just imagine hanging in another city for more than 9 hours. I called the 1-800 number and the costumer service answers were like: yes, ok, aha, hmm, oh and she told me that someone going to call me back regarding this issue. I’ll never ever deal with Pep boys for whatever kind of BS they gave me, I also had some minor problems with them.
That my story and can be the judge.

Edit: the store is in Escondido, California and it happend on 04-19-05

It'd be a cold day in Hell before I let a Pep Boys 'technician' near my car. Then again, it'd be a cold day in Hell before I let any mechanic near my car. But, it'd be pigs flying through a cold day in Hell for Pep boys to do it.

Stay Away!!!!! 90% of the time I walk out empty handed because their shelves are bare and have no stock. They do seem to stock quite a few scooters.

As far as parts and accessories go they are "OK". NEVER let them touch your car!

Agreed. As far as part selection goes, they are mediocre at best. However, their personel usually consists of people that have no automotive experience whatsoever.

I hate asking for parts at PepBoys because they either don't have it in stock, don't give me the part I need because they think I am looking for the "wrong" part, or just plain don't know what I am talking about.

A brief example: I came into PepBoys one day looking for a hose that runs from the heater core to the water pump. It's a pre-formed hose that fits right out of the box, no need to measure or cut anything. After asking the guy at the parts desk about it, he said I was actually looking for heater hose that they sell for like $5.00/ft. I explained to him that this was a pre-formed hose that didn't need to be measured or cut but he insisted on what he was saying and told me no such part exists. He didn't even check the computer just to verify what I was saying was wrong (although I wasn't wrong at all). I left PepBoys dissatisfied with their lousy personel and picked up the exact part I was looking for at AutoZone for $15, no questions asked.

Their prices aren't very competitive, either. If I remember correctly, a claybar kit (made by Mothers, which includes the claybar and their "detailing spray" aka soapy water) cost me $25. I only wanted the claybar, but unfortunately they would not sell it to me individually.

Bottom line--if you need a moped, motorized scooter or oversized sports compact mufflers, head to PepBoys. If not, head somewhere else.

The only thing that I use PepBoys for is vacuum line. They seem to be the only store that sells them in rolls where you can cut the line to the exact amount you need (as opposed to buying the precut 1 ft. lines that AZ sells).

pepboys is to auto repair what home depot is to home improvement. That is a large life sucking tumor with low prices, pitiful service, and ignorant employees.

What you really need is a privately owned parts store that services pro's. I have had good luck with several local stores but if you can't find one try NAPA. It's the only chain with knowlegable people i have seen, in fact just about the best parts guy i knew worked at NAPA

Pep Boys

A few years back, one of my office girls took her Camry in for oil change on a coupon. She drove down the road about five minutes. The engine locked up from no oil ( the pitcock fell out). Pep Boys took the responsibility, but wanted to replace the engine themselves, and pay for the rental. I wanted her to have Toyota put a new one in and give Pep Boys the bill, but she didn't have the upfront money. Pep Boys manager worked very hard to make sure she accepted the deal. By the way the manager was negotiating, I could tell it wasn't his first foray into liability.

Taking a car to a dealership is worse, because they charge more. They prey on fear and those who have bought their product with the expectation of dependability, reliability etc. The GM dealer just charge my mother $50 (part only) for a cabin air filter on a 1 year old car. Honda charged her $750 to install a new 02 sensor on her 4 cylinder Accord (off warranty). Cadillac charged my father $650. to tell him why the security light was staying on in his Eldo (Corroded wires). To fix, it would have been another $750. So he drives with the security light on. His car is out of warranty. Jeep just charged my girlfriend $650 for a tuneup (plugs and check the fluids!).

I have personally taken perfectly good running cars into the shop (dealers) Nissan, BMW, Chevy, and Ford, and they have come out with some other problem.

Most 3rd Gen'rs do the work themselves. If something was wrong with my '90 IROC Conv, the last place you would see it is in anybody's shop.

Thanks for letting me vent !

i really havent had any problems with pep boys. then again the only thing that i have had them done on any of my cars was put lifetime brakes on my sisters honda and they havent gone bad although the price was freakin off the roof..(290)...as far as parts go they usually have what i need and their parts people know somewhat what they are talking about though i sometimes have to correct them and i dont really know much about cars myself... i guess pep boys in the Las Cruces, NM/El Paso, TX area are a little better than AZ boys...so i cant really rag on them bad and i am glad i cant and i feel for everyone else who is raggin on them....sucks when a auto parts store who is suppose to help the public doesnt know jack s#!+ about cars.....

Ah, Pepboys, I worked there for a little over 3 years while in highschool/college. As a former employee, I would not get my car serviced there, except maybe for tires. Their Futura tires are actually quite decent for the price. I would highly recommend watching the installer though and make sure he's doing everything correctly with the right tools if you can.

Prices are more than almost everyone else's except for a few of the electronic components like control modules, switches, sensors, etc and maybe, maybe some accessories.

Corporate structure is a mess with them. Way to much separation from the top to the bottom. Lots of useless positions in higher management. Fortunately some of this was restructured but it still isn't where it needs to be. They put too much money into advertising instead of back into the store and service equipment. That's my $0.02

They're OK for me because of how close they are... the people aren't the nicest but there's an old man that always comes through when I need some weird part they have in the back....

Besides the crap I get from car buddies and stories on clubs, I've never had a problem with them. Good prices and the 90-day warranty is also a plus.
