buffer and compound, wet sand if they are deep. get a mild fine grit nothing to agressive. and you need a buffer too

a buffer will remove that. it would be even quicker if wet sanded first with like 1500-2000g to take the edge off em. then it would buff even faster.
it really depends on how much and what type of paint you have. clear coats are easier to buff than single stage paints from what i have read. i have buffed a few clear coat paints and have had real good luck with removing all the little scratch off em. if the paint job is thin the buffing won;t help you can only sand and buff some many times before it is gone.

I've always wanted to try wetsanding but I'm too nervous... is it easy to screw up or can an average joe get awesome results?

that was a picture of my car that Nick Posted....that's what some wind and a tarp will do (long story). The whole car looked like that on all of the body lines...including the fenders, hood, spoiler...just about everything. I had to use a high speed buffer with some "Perfect It III" by 3M and several other compounds/polishes. We got them out....but they were very very deep. If you have scratches that deep..then nothing will work by hand...you will have to have it done with a high speed buffer. Since you dont know to much about this stuff Nick..I would get a pro to do it.

it really depends on how muh paint is on the car. i painted mine with 3 heavy coats of hok clear so i knew i could go pretty far. but with a mild 1500-2000 grit wet sand paper it is pretty forgiving use a block to keep it smooth. not your fingers, you could sand a indent in the paint. and then you must have a high speed buffer to take the scratch out, i buff at like with my makita set at 3 which i think is around 1500 - 1700 rpm.

well my T/A hasn't got any real problem areas but it's just got the normal light scrathes and swirl marks when you look at it just right. Otherwise the paint is beautiful and I get lots of compliments. She's also white so the imperfections are less notable. Is this something worth taking 2000 grit to the whole car or should I just stick to polishing?

perfect your technique.... if it's fine scratches then you just need to learn how to use the polish and make sure you dry your car with something better then you are now. sanding should only be used on new paint, single stage or as a last resort on older paint.

I dry my car with micro-fiber or with a leaf blower but swirls, etc were there when I bought the car. I guess I'll have to keep working on the polishing this winter, then, 'cuz it's not working so far thanks for the info

Just some tips from a long time owner of red and black cars:
Use microfiber towels and applicator pads.
Clay the car before waxing or polishing to remove contaminants.
I have found when used with high quality products, these two hints have preserved the paint to a almost showroom quality.
