rubber coating in engine compartment ???
The engine compartment in my 1985 Z-28 appears to have a rubber coating of some type and is not just painted. Does anybody else have this? Most pics I see appear to be painted the body color and not this rubberized undercoating type stuff. I don't think it's rubberized undercoating. Due to the completeness of the application and because the engine has never been removed from the vehicle (I knew the only previous owner) I think the car must have came like this.
Any thoughts?

The previous owner sprayed it on. I would try to take it off if I were you. If you pull the motor, just paint the bay. The rubberized undercoating absorbs oil, and grease, then when you try to clean it, you can't. If it looks ok, then just leave it.
