Kinda does suck, but then again, a Camaro chassis probably cheaper overall than getting a new Belair chassis. Like the rest of us, guess he worked with what he had.
Five7Kid may appreciate - doesn't he have a Belair? Then again, maybe we shouldn't give him any ideas
I'm going to say that it's different and obviously well thought out. They did a good job with the transformation and shows the passion of hot rodding. On the flip side to that I agree with destroying what appears to be a perfectly good IROC. If you're going to do something like this I would have used a rolling chassis or parts car instead of one that could be restored. This rates up there with turning a GenIV Camaro into a GenI Camaro.

cool but pointless considering you can buy modified vette frames that are made purposely for the shoeboxes, and would easily ride, and handle better than our thirdgen chassis
Nice idea and execution, lots more 3rd gen solid chassis available than 50's chassis that's for sure. There's nothing wrong with updating a more modern chassis with a classic body. If I had a 50's Nomad I'd do it. Later.
I didn't know it was posted before.A 3rd gen is what about 3 grand or less a art morrison frame bare is about that much.I like the idea but i wouldn't used a unibody but the car looks great done.
I would hope way less - guess it depends on where you're at. Here in NC, I wouldn't pay more than $600 for a 3rd gen that I intended to take only the chassis from - I've had 3 that were running with no major body damage and the most expensive one was $900.
Yeah, I saw this build website a long time ago. He should have done more junkyard digging, before frankensteining a WHOLE IROC. And at the end of the day what does he have? A 56 chevy with a small block and (what the naked eye sees) IROC rims. Just seems like WAAAAAAAY too much work for a very mediocre finished product. That entire IROC body got crushed somewhere....lame idea. If he wanted a Domestic coupe, V8 powered, and awesome modern handling that he could put together himself there are alot of kit cars out there.
The whole basis of Hot Rodding... Why did he do it??? Because he could!!!!! Why not? Some very good fabricating, and when it's all done he's built the car that he wants.... Isn't that what we all do?????

He frankensteined a IROC dude. He took two cars that were already bad @ss and bred them. Issue is he should have used a donor car that maybe didn't have doors, a hatch, a hood, both fenders, taillights, an engine and trans, full interior, etc etc. I can see where this might be hard to wrap around someones head but, don't tell me he couldn't have found a uni body and suspension pieces somewhere. And if he needed a TPI donor all he had to do was lift a rock and look under it to find one of those laying around.
He could have done a lot of things differently.... It would appear he did exactly what he wanted to do with little regard for what others would think or say. For many of us, it's important to build something that is totally unique and doesn't conform to what the style or fad of the week happens to be... Cut up an IROC??? No big deal, lots of them around.
I guess I just don't understand putting a guy down because he built something different and unique using the parts he chose to use... Looks to me like he built a car to suit him without a lot of regard for what others thought about it. One of the best things about being a Hot Rodder is being able to take what you have and build what you want....in a manner that others haven't done....
Eventually people get tired of seeing the same old thing done in the same old way....and building a car totally different from what everyone else builds is just another way around it. Heck, there's probably a bunch of folks on some Tri-Five site somewhere launching the same complaints about how could he do that to a '56 Chevy... My answer would be the same... He built what he wanted to build the way he wanted to build it....

I guess I'll patronize your point. He did what he wanted to and took the risk of getting the Unpopular vote (which Im sure he wins) with Camaro guys. Still, I say, for example, you don't see ppl taking a perfectly fine Nissan Skyline and raping it to pieces to only put the engine and suspension in a old Nissan 240. No, what sensible ppl do, like my friend Tommy, they take a donor Skyline motor and put it in their 240, they dont destroy a perfectly fine sports car just because they feel like welding a red headed step child together on the weekend.
Well, one man's red headed stepchild is another man's pride and joy..... As for the Nissan's, they should all be fed to a crusher!!!!! Imported cars and other such junk are some of the main reasons this country is in such a terrible condition!!!! Sorry, I'm just not much on ricers... They all have way too loud fart cans and wake me up at night!!!!!
I agree with you on the import/domestic thing. As an individual I would not own an import. However, I don't discriminate their drivers. I have friends in Muscle cars, 4x4's, Drag cars, Boats, Imports, Exotics, Bikes, sport trucks, you name it. It's all just a fashion statement. The basic theory behind all of them is a common denominator: performance. And regardless of what anyone says, we all have something to contribute to one another, even if we wouldnt be caught dead in our buddy's car.

Lol...all those guys that are pissed he used an IROC....get over it! It's not like our cars are made of gold. That was a very cool project he did.
I bet most of your cars are not even show quality tuners, so there should not be any resentment towards this guy.

First of all I want to thank ALL of the people who support what we did with the iroc/56! Most purists hate what we did to the iroc, but at the same time the tri-five people support it understanding that we all do what we do for a reason, If you ever drove a tri-five you KNOW how the handle???? The two cars combined cost me a LOT less than what a Morrison chassis cost by several thousand dollars. It handles like the iroc with the classy look of the 56. Since the car was built we have installed a larger GM performance cam and upgraded the 700R4 with all new insides and a shift kit. Would I do it this way again? This took a lot longer than what most people want to put in a build, so probably not. I am sorry if my project ruffled some feathers, but hotrodders have been ruffling feathers for years! ;-)
I think that car is ugly. Waste of a very nice Iroc. It sounds as if you are dissing the Iroc's styling, the Iroc-z in my eyes is a very classy car, especially if they are in nice shape, like the one destroyed was. Seeing such a nice car, all chopped up, is disheartening. I'm very biast, of course, but you should have found a different car to hack up then a nice and RARE yellow Iroc-z. There are a ton of POS Sport Coupes and Berlinetta's that nobody wants anymore, go hack one of those up next time.

The metal work & fab is realy good!!
I hope you sold the parts to help with the project! LOL.
But I agree with an earlier Q- why a subframe?? Wouldn't a Chevelle, Impalla, or Biscayne work better?
So at least you have no bump=steer..?..!! HA HA
Yes I sold the hatch, doors, fenders, hood, the original wiring harness, etc. No subframe here....the whole chassis lengthened to the tri-five wheel base. Again, the entire build is at www.56iroc.com And no, those frames DON'T handle like an IROC!! If you own one, you know what I'm saying. I had bought a used up Trans-Am to put under it, but on closer inspection that chassis was trash...bad rockers..bent up front suspension and I knew what I had with the iroc so......
Mad props to that guy for a hell of a build . I could only imagine how much fun it is to drive . Amazing work . I hope I develop half the fabrication skills that guy has before I croak.
BUT as a so called third gen purist , my heart sank a little when I seen it was an original yellow car only because yellow Rocs have a special spot in my heart (obviously) . I would have done the same thing but used a different donor car.

Color aside , awesome build !
My heart sank when I had to use the iroc after buying a Trans-Am to use as the donor, but alas..... the rockers had been beat up too much and the front suspension was also an issue. Since I already knew what I had with the iroc I bit the bullet and we used it! Thanks for your comments

UGLY???? I don't think they are calling IROCs classics yet, but you don't get it do you? I loved my IROC ....the ride, performance I didn't like the way it baked with all that glass here in AZ...I had it, it was a SOLID platform to build on, and it is different! I had bought a Trans-Am, but upon closer inspection the rockers had been damaged and the front suspension had some issues. I KNEW what I had with my Camaro...I had driven it for 5 years and replaced all the brakes, suspension, and short block (upgraded from a 305 to 350) so I am really sorry, but to call my car UGLY???
I did disagree with using the yellow car as a donor but there is NO way the 56 is even close to being ugly . Its a very classic / classy looking car to begin with then to back it up with the handling and performance of an Iroc makes it even better .
I love the old "50's" classic cars. It is hard seeing a nice IROC getting chopped up like that, but it was for a good cause. Thats an awesome car!
My dad bought a 1978 Camaro so it could be hacked up for his 1950 panel truck. It turned out really nice in the end. Every now and then I kind of wish I would have stopped him and kept the car. It was really nice too, black in color, 350 motor,,, dayumm! Oh well that was along time ago.
Damn, they wasted a YELLOW iroc on what ever that would be called now. Give the the IROC. Then again im not a big 50s fan. So how is it titled? Iroc or 56 Bel Air? My dad would love to have a 55-56 chevy. Car looked great in the end. But i would have considered the vette frame idea. Nice fab work and paint.

It is titled as a 56....no emission testing and no power robbing catalytic converter and exhuast flows through SLP headers and 3" tube to the back...and again I only had $10,000 in both cars to start ($6500 for the 56 and $3500 in the iroc) which included the complete drive train and suspension; a Morrison frame with 'vett suspension is more than that without the running gear. My budget wouldn't allow me to go with that, so we built it with what we had!

Never thought about it that way. Thats a smart plan. With none of that emissions crap and all of the hassles. That thing must be wicked. Sad loss of a yellow IROC-Z but one sweet 56

Can you say squeeks and rattles? Why kill an IROC for that?
?????Squeeks and rattles???? Not so with the Sedan, the hardtops were a lot noisier....Read the threads BEFORE you criticize.... Go look at the build....IT IS A UNITBODY 56 now.....NO FRAME....Less to squeek and rattle.
