I really like the looks of the notchback, with the larger rear deck it should create more down force without a wing. But man there is no room for speakers or anything. i do like the looks though.

My notchback was original from the factory. It looks alot different from the aftermarket ones if you see it up close. People are convincing me not to get a different spoiler. Whats do you guys think?

Especially on a stock notchback. That's too rare to mess with. You've already got a very unique looking car by having the stock notchback.

I've never liked the notchback rear lids. But I guess it would lower the vehicles total weight as all that rear glass is pretty heavy.

Might as weel use teh blank spot to give you some info. This wing was designed by mecham for the 3rd gen. Very few were made and Mecham no longer has the molds. They have asked that anyone who has one please contact them. They would like to use an original to make a new mold so they can produce them again. This was the spoiler that was used in the speed trails. This was the wing that was on the Firebird's best run ever, not teh aero wing as some have thought. This wing is the most functional wing ever developed for the 3rd gen. I will try to find teh post where Joe has their contact info! Joe and I are going to try to track down the guy who has this spoiler to see if he will let Mecham use it!

Most any F-body spoiler will fit an aftermarket notchback, but not a factory one....notice how GTABadboy's is flat, while the aftermarket ones in the pictures curve back. You could modify any wing to fit, but thats why the GTAs with this notchback didn't have the Aerowing to begin with...it wouldn't fit, and GM wasn't going to retool just for a limited run.

Who made this notchback, Motion or GT Auto? Or someone else? I like this one better than any I have seen...thats the one I'll get for mine. The Mecham wing should fit it just fine.

BTW I'm going to attempt to make the rear window power...should be interesting, esp with a targa conversion. Not sure how its going to affect stereo performance though, since the whole rear area of the car is pretty much cut off.

Well I can tell you that it wasnt GT Auto. Their hatch design is far from the stock look. I believe it could have been Motion, but I am not 100% sure since I bought it used.

I've seen that second kind of notchback on my friend's car (the one on the bird w/ the z28 wing. I like it because it continues the natural line of the hatch glass (if it was there) instead of suddenly dropping off before it gets to the rear end. He is also planning to put a Z28 spoiler on it when the rest of the car is completed (it has nothing on it right now and the car's in pieces) If anyone has a side shot of that same bird it'd be great to see one

The notchback looks great, but is it worth the $600+?? And how would you get the 91-92 Z28 spoiler to fit on a bird?

If I do own the motion product (which i believe is true), then yes I would buy a new one for $600. The hatch is SOLID. Dont think you'll get any weight savings with this, because the notchback I have weighs more than my actual hatch did. It has a section of boxed tubing underneith the flat surface of the lid that is molded to the fiberglass to keep everything solid, and it does a great job. When I bought mine it was incomplete without hatch strut mounts and lock mechanism. I had to work with stock units to make something fit and im not really happy with the way I had it turn out. Ordering one new should be a different story.

As for the requested side pic, this is as close as I can get it without actually taking more pictures of the car:

I bought a Motion Glass notch yrs ago(back around 1988)and it was damn solid!! If I remember right the only thing it did have was the space(and I think the studs sticking out)for the locking bracket--nothing else-you had to fab everything else. I had it about a year before I sold it-never having been mounted! The kid I sold it to said the body shop had a really hard time lining it up because it was made so damn crooked!! He showed me all the fiberglass that had to be added just so it would look ok. hopefully they're made much better now. Back then I paid around $800 for it.

Tony and GMFB:
Your experiences w/ the motion glass one seem to indicate exactly what my friend has in store for him. It appears either they still aren't available with all the preparations, or he also has an early one. (I'm guessing the latter)

Thanks for the side shot GMFB, I like it a lot, hopefully this'll convince him to stick w/ the notch.

Factory notchbacks weigh a lot more than the glass hatch.

The Hawk's or factory notchback would look wicked with a stock high-rise Z28 spoiler on it. I think that's the way I'm gonna go with my '87 GTA project car. Too bad I can't find any pictures of such a thing.

That's exactly what I was going to do with mine till I found a mecham wing.
But Hawks still has my notch and my high rise spoiler walked off. If the mecham had been reproduced I had also contemplated the 4th styled wing.
I was just unsure of how the sides would meet w the hatchback raised edges.

Re: notchback with spoiler

I dont know how to put pics up on this, but. You can see my notch back to the left or go to my profile. The wing on my 87 iroc z28 is off a 92 rs. As far as I know this wing never came on a Z28. just the 90 91 and 92 RS. THIs winter I am takeing about 2in off of each side to line up better with the side of the notch back.

that notch back is the only one I've seen that I actually like, the other ones that go on birds and some camaro's make it look like a huge fiero gt or something, talk about ugly
