You don't need it. I think it's mostly sound insulation. It probably has about 2 pounds of dirt in it too which just makes your engine compartment more dusty.

I am plannning on ripping mine off, but I just got the fatherly "I dont you should do that" talk.
Could someone else tell me it is pointless also. I figure if 2 people agree then what the hell.
Pictures would be helpful.

40 bucks for a nice new one...........
i removed mine when i repainted the car, i haven't had any problems to date that i could truly blame for not having the liner. i think it looks better with it off because i have nice paint on there now; however on stock cars i think it looks better with a new one in good shape. so long as you keep them clean and take care of the car they hold up pretty well. it's all personal preference looks wise.
as far as what they actually do i believe that it's strictly for holding in heat during the winter months........could be wrong there as well but no one has yet to prove what it's real purpose is unless it's just to make things look nicer to prospective buyers who don't want to see a bunch of bracing. if it was useless it wouldn't be there since car companies like to save every penny possible.

Mine has never had one since I've owned it. Paint is now about 7 years old and it's fine. Sitting in the hot sun will get the hood hotter than the engine heat will.

I think someone else said in another post that it actually acts as a fire blanket. If the engine catches fire, the plastic hold downs melt off and the lining falls to the engine and smothers the fire. Either way...I took mine off too! The paint under the hood looks REAAAAAAL nice and new!

If anything, its probably there to help warm the eninge in cold weather.

Re: hood heat shield
Someone also pointed out in that post that even if that was a "fire blanket" It would not be very effective and everything would probably be toast by the time those clips come off.

One hell of an old thread, but I searched it and was reading through to see if it was really necessary for these cars. It doesn't seem to be.
