Underhood matting material

I have a 92 Firebird Formula. My question is how inportant is the matting material under the hood. The entire car is spotless except for this material and I would like to remove it. The only purpose I see for this is to protect the paint from excessive heat. But is it absolutly nesassary? Can I remove it without causing problems to my paint? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've heard of people who removed it and had no problems. I don't believe it is absolutely necessary.

PS - Welcome to the boards.

It's more for quieting engine noises than anything. Your paint will be fine.

I live in sunny, hot So. Cal. I've had it off for 2 years now with no problems. It's mostly there to muffle sound and to help the engine warm-up in cold weather. I think it looks a lot cleaner with it gone.

I've seen it in the Classic Industries catalogue.

It is designed to aid in an engine fire. The round plastic tabs are designed to melt first then the insulator would fall over the engine in an attempt to die it out.

By the way Ator, awesome car!!!

I purchased mine from GM, perhaps, two months ago. If I recall correctly, the price was $44.

Thanks, I get compliments all the time, can't say as I mind either. I've got a 67 Camaro RS/SS fully restored about 10 years ago and I still will get more compliments for the Firebird.
