About to give up the "junkyard doors" search- JC Whitney outer lower door skin?

So I'm getting sick of junkyard crawling for good doors... anyone use the JC Whitney lower door skin for the outside? My rust is along the bottom of the door skin, and extends to the inner door skin where the two are crimped together. I could re-make the inner skin with regular 'ol sheetmetal (since it's hidden) if I have to. Just wondering if anyone's tried this before? I assume the JC Whitney stuff is cheap metal ($26/each), any repro companies make it?

Suggestion

You might want to download and check out the Classic Industries Firebird catalog. Door parts are in the 330's roughly, as far as page numbers go, and they're horrendously expensive--about $300 for an '85-'90 door panel--but they ARE another option, and we're talking about new parts as opposed to junkyard ones.

Anyway, hope this helps. Still trying to digest your suspenion rebuild posts and figure out what will work with what I plan to do...

Later.

When I was 16 I rebuilt a VW bug and ordered a rear apron from JC Whitney. What I received was such a poor fit-- and was wrinkled anyway-- that I ended up repairing the original one.

The local body shop supply store near me sells pre-cut door skin bottoms just for repairiing lower door skins. Anything like that in your area? They're only $8.50 apiece at H&H near me, and I know you can weld Tom, it's a simple matter of cutting away the rust and welding in a new bottom.

most bodyshop suppliers sell rust repair panels localy they make a universal door bottom about 12 inches tall with the crip where the door skin ataches then a extra 3 in or so to weld to the bottom of the door frame all you have to doo then is fold the ends if i remember right there about 36 in long

Words of wisedom. Consult your local paint supply house for collision repair panels. Often times JCWhitney price with a fit guarentee (at least here).
JCWhitney = taiwan made headache... I wouldn't b.s. you on this .

ive scrapped and watched alot of good doors and fenders go to shredder around here, can find them if you get creative, try to pick up a mechanically dead third gen sititng in someones front yard abandonesd for cheap, youd be surprised, sometimes you get them given to you if is an unknowledgable owner.

leave notes and everything, you would be surprised what you can get cheap or free.

ive gotten 92 model year cars years ago for 60 bucks(covers new plates cost back then for their other car they have that doesnt need work) or less just by asking about them, it happens,.

my neighbor finds camaros and birds thirdgens all the time for super cheap, next to nothing, i dont want to though, they arent worth anything as parts still yet,,. just scrap them as is after taking only what you need off them

i watched an 83 Z28 HO305 car get totally wasted complete car, it had the uncommon deep kinda brown mix color interior and the light gold brown honey exterior, i didnt want it for the 100 bucks he wanted, wasnt worth it to me. so it went to shredder also after yanking engine and tranny, had perfect doors and interior and tops.
i know of a blue 86 camaro right now a friend has, the doors and such are nice and good glass hood but has a chip in it though on a corner, we're going to cut it up soon cuz its in weeds with dead 305.
then i know of an 86 or so silver digital dash berlinetta thats will end up shredded too soon, currently the guy who got it before me thinks he will get it runnign again, but i bet it ends up in peoria yard also too just like all the rest of them
it has alot of goodies on it, tons, too much to list. im not interested ini t though or id probably go get it off him.
i need ot find an 82 t/a for parts, thats not as easy now, more Z28s around than t/a's of course. i let an 83 Z28 LG4 A4 go to waste that rana nd drove even, but floor board compeltely gone from pedals back to seat and from inner rocker over to tranny tunnel, so..
ran strong though with an old 350 shoved in place of the orig LG4

theres more around that can be gotten cheap, too many still, too common, maybe some other year they be worth grabbing for parts or what have you

good luck

Thanks for the tips, everyone! I'll stay far away from the Whitney stuff... maybe give a few paint shops and body shop supply stores a call. And another parts car couln't hurt! That's where I got my current doors; I bought an '84 2.8 Firebird for $250 to use for it's front clip (including subframe and windshield), and wound up using the doors because they were rust-free at the bottom. 5 years later, they're rusted up. What a shame...

Only bummer is to fix these doors I know I'm gonna have to take them off the car. Turns it into a weekend project instead of a "come home from work and spend a few hours" project.

I have an '86 Camaro that I'm currently trying to get the body fixed up.

It has major rust through the bottom of both doors, and spots on both rear quarter panels.

I took it to one restoration guy who said I needed two new doors, new quarter panels, and a new hood. He said the entire project would cost $5000+ to make it look like new.

My question is, why can't a body shop use rust panels like the ones for sale for Camaros at this site:
http://www.rustrepair.com/app2/onlinecat.htm?p=sm

They are cheap, so why would I want replace the entire door when I could use these panels?
