Car: 1984 Trans Am
Engine: GMPP 350 V8
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 3.23
That car is a real mess.
To answer your question, yes in 1988 624 Notch Back GTA's were built.
It appears to be an 88 GTA with a 91/92 nose added. It also looks like the factory notch back was added also, because the car has normal back seats. Notchback cars had different rear seats (they had headrests).
I believe AA8 was the RPO for a factory notchback. So finding that would verify if the car was legit.

On a more serious note, the nose is wrong, the back seats are wrong, the taillights are wrong... in fact, you know what, I think this is a regular old 91-92 car with GTA wheels and a notchback added.
I hate when people try to pass cars like this off as a "rare factory car!"

Car: 1987 GTA
Engine: LS1
Transmission: 4L60e
I've got 2 of 'em - hardtops that is.
The car on ebay looks to be a legit: 87-88 GTA with an engine swap. The seats don't look right to make the car a true notchback, and the nose on the front is most definitely a swap from somebody wrecking the car. Although, just the parts on that car alone are worth the amount being bid on right now.

The Vin # indicates the car is a 1988 T/A/GTA w/ a L98.
Hardtop GTA's are common.

No, the W in the Vin (5th digit) will only indicate that the car is a TransAm, since the GTA was based off of the T/A, only the W was used.
Firebirds and Formulas have an S in the Vin.

I know this tech article (https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/faq/thirdgen.shtml) says a true Notchback will have the K in the VIN, but I own 3 documented Notchbacks that don't have a K in the VIN. I also have the factory AA8 code on my RPO sticker to identify them as original Notchbacks. I don't know where that "K" in the VIN information came from for that tech article, as I thought that was the model year.
Also, all 3 of mine are hardtops, without the t-tops. Of course they're legit GTAs

That's not a factory notchback car.
If it were, the 10th digit of the vin would be "K".
