I was thinking about having my t-top Iroc converted to a solid targa top. I think the targa looks really clean. Of course I would get some sub-frame connectors and a roll-cage. Has anyone done a t-top to targa conversion. I would love to see some pics

There was a guy on the boards that took a T-top car and was making it into a targa. He got it from the parts yard... one hell of a project!

I have the mold almost done to do fiberglass or carbofiber top.



DOing TONS of mods. complete 4thGen Int.
Replacing the Front bumper cover since I tore mine off.(hence the 86gfx)
HOK cobalt blue kandy paint.
418 single turbo motor, tubular k member and a-arms.
8 point cage.
Been collecting all the parts. now to find TIME to finish it all.

I'm doing the conversion as well. I pulled mine from the junkyard I've been piddleing around with the project now and then because I havent had the time to really get to work on it.

BTW, Trailblaze has done the conversion. He posted a few times with some nice pics.

the only thing i question is wind noise while driving...

You'll have to fabricate one on your own or pay someone to make one for you.

If done correctly, you will hear just as much wind noise as regular t'tops or less. All it would take is a flange on the center edge where the top and windshield pillar meet. Have it where you angle the top and the flange goes under the pillar and when you lay the top down it keeps the center section from bowing up.
Course one could eaisly make a miniscule wind foil about a few millimeters thick and 1/8th of an inch high above the roof's surface where the wind will be forced to go over the leading edge of the targa top. That would solve some wind related issues.

It wont be any worse then a vette Targa top or a vert top for wind noise. Im using the stock T top type pin latches for the rear and the identical setup in the front from a vert.

Use a vert gasket in the front. and a 1piece seal around the back also.

The top is custom made. Im doing one outa fiberglass 1st to work out all the little bugs. Then Im doing one outa carbon fiber. Painted body color. and one outa Smoked lexan. like stock 92Z t tops.

I belive whistler paid a company to do his and upwards in the 3-5k$$ range.

There was a guy here at the local car craft show a few years ago with a 92 Z that had a targa top. the original t-top center piece came out of the car to make it a targa. what i mean is it could come out and go back in so the stock t-tops would still be able to be used.

Thats the best idea ever. Just mod the center post on a T top so it can be removed.

Though you should really considera full cage. even with a typical roll bar if it goes over, that windows is gonna get crushed and slit open your check like a can opener.

this sounds awesome, but i do have one question...
Does anyone who has done this still have a leakproof car?
My main drive to do this is to eliminate leaking once and for all.

the weather stripping would have to be a totally custom job, and if its not done well, its going to leak. Thats probably a bigger project than actually doing the targa conversion

of these 5 guys that have "attempted" i have only seen maybe 3 cars in total that have it. im sure theres more but ive been here for a little over a year and only seen 3 pics of completed and functional ones. kinda makes me a wanna try it. it would be pretty simple if you had a good plan and knew a shop willing to cut and form the glass.

Well does anybody who has a t-top car have a leakproof car? Maybe temporarily but eventually they all will leak.

Only because you dont maintain your tops. Our cars are no different than any other t-top car, If you dont keep the seals clean and softened then yes they will leak.

For your information my t-tops don't leak but I know that eventually they will. I know that you can prolong the life of your seals but they are made of rubber and in time rubber breaks down. You can keep them clean and soft but there are other things to consider (baking in the sun, chemical breakdowns). So I stand by my original statement that t-tops will leak eventually.

Rubber seals n parts do breaks down from sun exposure as most folks don't take care of it. You can keep them soft and prolong their life by allot if you use the right products.

We got folks doing it all the time in the bike forum to make 20+ year old rubber intakes that turned into rocks, turn back into useful parts.
