5-sp shiftplate interchange
Will the 5-speed shiftplate from a '92 Camaro fit exact in an '88 Formula??

question, im doing a auto to manual swap, can i take the auto shift plate off and put a manual shift plate in without changing my center console? and are the 4th gen consoles a bolt in item or do you have to some modifacations to it to get it to work in a 88 firebird.

Yes, you can put a manual shift plate directly in, but the problem is finding one. I did a manual swap 6 months ago, and still havn't found one. GM stopped making them, and there were very few made to begin with. If you find one, I get dibs on it cuz I did the swap first. It's really not that big of a deal not having one, I think I'm gonna try and modify my auto plate so that there isn't a gaping hole, even if it won't look perfect.
The 4th gen console swap is more involved, I believe, and I personally think it doesnt look good in our cars.
Don't let this discourage you from doing the swap, it's the best thing I've done for my car.

making one out of sheet metal doesnt sound like a bad idea. but then i think it would clash with the interior. hey colonboy14 how long did it take you to do the swap? do you have any good tips?

Well, the install was pretty straightforward, the hardest part being hanging the clutch pedal. Make sure you cut out the carpet where the pedals bolt to the firewall, if you leave the carpet inbetween the firewall and the pedals, there won't be enough pedal travel and the clutch wont disengage.
All in all it took me 3 full days, but it was my first time doing anything of this magnitude, and I kept having to run out for parts, etc. One of those days was figuring out why my clutch wouldn't disengage.
Just do a search, theres a lot of info on this site, and pm me if you have any questions.
