Holes in Hood

My 84' Z28 has two openings on the hood, kinda like ram air. There is a moulding around the openings edges (like door edge guard). Other than that, it is wide open. Is there supposed to be a grill or cover inside these openings? There aren't any other older 3rd gens around here for me to look at for comparison.

If they do get plugs, does anyone know the correct terminology for the parts ( as in what they are called)? I'll post a pic in a bit.

There is supposed to be a black plate over those. Those hoods were functional on the CFI cars.

cut up hood

This is the fiberglass hood Chevy used on 82-85 Z-28s. The holes were obviously cut by someone and then door trim moulding was put around the hole to cover the cuts. There aren't any plugs that I can think of to cover those holes. Usually there is fiberglass in the place of the holes and it looks just like the sides of the depression in the hood.

the only fiberglass hoods that were used on 3rd gen Camaro's were from 82-83. They were actually functional and the flaps would open up.

i might be off on the years, but there are early z-28s had fiberglass hoods too that weren't functional. There were 3-4 that we threw out because they were cracked pretty bad and none had flaps that would open. in his pic it looks like there is even some fiberglass strand hanging down in the holes, like someone cut up a non-funcitonal scooped hood. i did find some pics of several with the flaps though, most were the '82 pace cars.

It is a steel hood, and the holes are perfectly cut. And I mean perfect. The edges look like the holes were stamped into the hood. Ist it possible that a steel hood came on CFI camaro's and someone installed it on my car over the years?

I am really confused now. Even the insulation on the underside is formed around the holes.

That's the hood insulation from the underside of the hood you are seeing. I'll get a pic of it. If you look at the hole on the left, you will notice another edge, it is also steel, and the two edges were pressed together and covered by the edging.

when i was lookin for pics of that style hood i came across 2 or 3 cars on ebay with that same style of setup. check out the 82 pace car on ebay and there is an 83 z28 with that same set up too. from that first pic it looked like a chopped up fiberglass hood. your's is kinda cool though.......ram air it!!!

The only years that came factory with fiberglass hoods were form 82-83. In 1982, the hoods were fiberglass...and the flaps did not open. In 1983 the LU5 air induction hood was fiberglass, and the flaps did open. In 1984, all of the 305 Cross Fire V-8's were dropped and replaced with the L69 H.O. & all Z28 hoods were now steel.
