Detailing/Painting engine bay while it is removed

Motor is coming out, and my question is how stupid is it of me to want to really detail the engine bay?

I had a supercharger and they did a horrible battery tray switch, they really butchered the job and I have rust where they fabbed a makeshift battery tray.

When installing the s/c I figure they had clearance problems with the piping (s/c is a paxton sn-89 made for Mustangs I think) and had to dent the wheel well to make clearance for the s/c.

The horrible paint condition really makes me want to sand it and paint it myself (never painted before) and remove the dent the best I can. I would also like to remove the rust from the rigged battery tray (remove it all together), ALL THE RUST and move the battery to the rear while I have time to get the motor ready.

Am I being stupid here?

i had a friend that painted his while teh motor was in! it still turned out really good. i would suggest if youve never painted before to have someone help you. it will take a while once you figure the time your going to take in preping it, then painting it. most likely primer, then a couple coats of your color of choice.

Best time to paint it. If u don't u will wish u did. The hardest thing is getting all the old gresse off. The rust I would sand blast. Messy but it works good. If no sand blaster I have used rust mort. And never had a prob with rust comeing back. Anywere there is bare metal use a good 2 part etching primmer.( not can) Then u can prime and paint. Or (not sure) If u can just paint over the etch primmer. Or use a sealer than paint.

paint the engine bay one solid color, then detail the specific things the color of your car(i.e. colored hoses, strut tower caps, etc.) make sure they match though

I guess if your car was going to be a trailer queen/show-only ride, then it'd look weird. But I'd never question a black engine bay... in fact, I spray painted mine that way! One of these years when I rebuild my motor (laughs) I'll be re-doing the engine bay over again, cleaning it and sanding it and etc- but it'll wind up with black paint on it again.

Do it while it is removed. When I did the engine in my IROC I took EVERYTHING out.

I still wish that it looked this good. *grumbles something about the damn salt and winter driving*
