I'm in the process of prepping the car for paint and want to get rid of the rust I have on the metal band that holds the hatch glass in place. It's not bad (light surface rust), but I'm not sure what kind of paint to use to paint the metal once I clean it off. I would greatly prefer brush on (model enamel paint?) because it would be a major pita to mask off the glass.

Any ideas?

Remove the trim (4 bolts for the hatch and then a couple screws) and spray bomb it a nice satin black....unless you want brush marks.

my car had pretty light rust on there so I just did a quick sanding and spray painted it. Looks good.

I sanded it and spray painted it flat black, looked good, few weeks later the rust is comming through the paint.

I painted mine with Rustoleum --sp? satin black and it looks good.
I went right over the rust too.
BTW, I did the same thing to my '87 about 10 years ago and it held up just fine.

I used a red scotchbrite pad, and tried to get all of the rust off. It's more than light surface rust, I would find a good set of used ones at the j/yard. BTW, I did mine 5 years ago and they still look great.

Na it's just light surface rust that I plan on sanding out. The real rust lies in the wheel wells I'm just waiting for a break in the heat (read humidity) so that I can cut it out and weld in some new metal. Hopefully I can do that monday.

I'd like to know as well. This is the ONLY part of my car that has rust and it's a pain to even look at.

why would you have to remove the decklid for that outter metal trim? Just wondering because I was under the impression that that didnt hold the glass in place, and if it doesnt hold the glass in place there is no reason to remove the decklid? Yey or Ney?

OK heres what I did. Removed the 2 lid bolts on the left and then removed the trim. The 2 bolts go through a plate on the trim. I then sandblasted and painted the trim. When It was dry I put it back on. Repeat for the other side. So it can be done without removal of the decklid if you do one side at a time. This was a bigger pain than I thought it would be.

I masked the surrounding areas, put a cover over the rest of the car, masked it, sanded it, primed it, and sprayed it black with it on the car.

Nothing wrong with that but I wanted to blast mine inside and out. Mine also needed new adhesive, it was letting water stand where some chunks had come out.

You can also use SEM Trim Black (avail from most auto paint stores, in bulk or in a spray can) . POR 15 isn't UV resistant, so youd have to paint over it for it to hold up.
