Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

I need some help guys...Is here anybody that has changed their lately 80's Sport coupe Camaro's in to IROC-Z? or Z28??....I am doing it on my now...Have bought ground effects and new front bumper cover and have also ordered a new rear bumper that are arriving soon...

I've got my gfx some weeks ago and I am now drilling the holes...The door panels looks great, and the rocker panels seems easy also, but not the Quarter pieces...I don't know what is wrong but there is something that isn't right...

Here is a couple of pictures of how they look now mounted on:

As you can see there is a veeery big "distance between the quarter panel and the rear fender...Should it be like this or???....I need every advice you guys have...And please show me pictures of how you have mounted it..

Looks to me like you just have it about a 1/4" to far forward.

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

Ok...thanks guys....I was thinking about the same...You see it isn't so easy for me to find a Z28 or an IROC around here in Norway..These cars are very rare on this side of the country so i need all the advice I can get...I know I also have to move it a little bit "backwards" on the car but should there be this big distance between the fender and the gfx??

I show you with a picture:

I think the problem you are having is because you have the wrong rear bumper cover. You need one from an 85-90 car with factory groundeffects. It will have a matching "built in" rea piece that lines up with that gap you are showing.

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

yeah i know i have the wrong rear bumper...i am waiting on a used bumper that comes of an 86 Z28...Think that one would fit better...But that doesn't have anything to do with the "gap" beween quarter panel and rear fender..I was thinking about that gap...But mayby it't gonna be this way...

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

ok...*puuuh* Then I don't have to worry about this anymore...I am still waiting for my rear bumper so I will see how it is going to be then.....
Now I am just worried about my Rocker panels...I thought they were going to be the easiest part but it seems that I am missing some brackets...I can of course make some new one in the welding workshop that I work in but I don't want to begin welding in my car...So much afterwork with that....

To the best of my knowledge, that gap shouldn't exist.I believe it should line up with the rear of the qurter panel edge where the rear bumper cover mounts.Forgive me if I'm mistaken sorry, I was looking at that pic wrong. CYARS is right that gap is perfectly normal

Ok...I guess it is normal then...I will see how it looks when I get my rear bumper cover...Now I am more curious about the rocker panels...I am curious if they are mounted tight enough with the bolts on the underside and the bolts on both ends...Since I do not have this bracket on my car...

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

you must have the bracket. My suggestion is either to fab a set, or better yet find some from a 91-92 car. They are much beefier. I just finsished doing exactly what you are trying to do. For the brackets I drilled out the spot welds to get them off the junk yard car. (spotweld bit works miracles) then I drilled the wholes in my rocker. After that I sealed the rocker and installed blind nuts. Then installed the bracket. If you just weld onto the rocker you remove any rust proofing that may have been there. You must either drill some holes and re-rust proof, or go my way and make them removable.

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

Ok..It seems that this could take some time I see....I am a little bit confused cause, before I ever thinked about buying any ground effects people said it was the easiest job..Just to drill holes and put them on..I must say that there is a little bit extra work...But that shouldn't be any problem...The big problem is that I don't think I could find any kind of junk yard car here in Norway....So can you pleease send me some pictures how that bracket-system looks like????...You see I am working at a steel workshop so i can probably make myself a new one...But i have to see how it looks like first...
Can you please take some pictures and send me??...would help me alot..

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

Also about the rocker panel ground effects i used i think a 1-1.5 wide strip of angle iron about the length of the gfx. screwed it on the car and then bent it to the correct angle and then drilled the holes for the bolts on the ends of the gfx and screwed the gfx onto the angle iron and then tightened the bolts and then i was done. i hope this helps.

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

Did you also do that??...That was my plan from the beginning but I wasn't sure if anyone haven't done it before....I have this kind of angle iron myself and i was planning to spot-weld it on the car..But mayby it is easier to just scew it in...Gotta use som sealing around the screw-holes then so any dirty or salted water does not come in..I don't like rust along the rockers..

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

Thanks...I appreciate the response here....Now I am just waiting on a new rear bumper cover...As you can see on one of my other threads here I don't have that one...And the shipping from US to Norway is about 400bucks so I'm almost considering moving to US...lol....

But the biggest problem now is actually the painting...I have sanded them down with low grit paper and I have been doing that for hours so I am very tired of that job...Now i'm going to use filler and new fresh coat of paint on it and see if I have got ridden of all the old small cracks from stone and stripes....Do you have a tip on painting jobs??...I can almost asure you that I will ask you more questions about the GFx..

Re: Mounting GFX on a 87 Sport Coupe???

hey man dont worry about it. u have questions i might have answers. just keep sanding and using the filler... once you get everything nice and smooth it will look awesome. you have any recent pics of the car in progress? good luck -Matt

another tip... i kno its prolly frowned on but if u cant get the rockerpanel ground effects to the fenders and quaterpanels get a drill and drill about the debth of a screw hear... about a 16th of an inch into the ground effect and but small screws from the ground effects to the car. this will suck them up to the car nice and smooth... then use filler to smooth in the holes and sand then ur done.

LOL there is a post on this board about 3rd gens with no ground effects (yuck!). You guys are going the right direction adding them. I added 85-90 TA ground effects to an 83 Firebird and it improved the look a million percent.

PS DO NOT USE BONDO on ground effects. The only filler you can use is specifically for flexible urethane parts.
