You`re kidding me, right? Do you make house calls to the west coast? Looks better than many expensive paint jobs I have seen.

No house calls but I would like to do another one though. This is my first one and I learned a lot. I think my next one would turn out better.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

OMG what did you do to get that gloss? Please tell me that's just wet sand and polish. I just bought 2 quarts of "Rust Stop" paint from Ace Hardware the stuff's solvent based enamel is that basically the same as what you used here? Finally did you primer the car before you rolled the paint on or not? Sorry for all the questions but when you get a roll on job of that quality it should be expected

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Final wetsand was with 2000 grit then polished with a orbital buffer(afraid to use high speed, I didnt want to burn it) then touched it up with wax. No primer this is right over the factory paint. But it was prepped. 8 coats very thin.

Looks pretty good. I saw an article in Hot Rod (I think) a couple months ago where they did a roll on job on an old Falcon. I've been thinking of trying it out. What did you sand with between coats?

2 coats 400 grit 2 more 800 grit 2 more coats 1000 then finished up with 2000 after the 8th coat. If I do it again I will wetsand after each coat , it will eliminate the orange peel better

Looks good but good luck next time the car needs to be painted- I hope it doesn't give you unexpected problems if you go back to traditional paint.

what a hack job, go buy some single stage automotive paint next time for $50 instead. This will turn to crap soo quickly and be such a pain to remove. Don't spread this around the net like the last guy.

Actualy the 2 cars ive seen, everyone thought the paint work was extensive and expensive. Roll on a tun of coats and wet sand till smooth. It looks amazing! Saw a harley done the same way.

Hmm, I'm going to break my post up into two parts...

First thoughts: Damn, that actually looks halfway decent...

Second thoughts: I could've fixed, customized, and painted a wrecked car in five days, why not just do it right?

Is painting a car this way not last or something?

IMO it looks great (from the pictures we see) I see NO flaws at all!!!

Still think a sticky needs to be made.

no it has no long term UV protecting qualities, bring up the other 3 page post about roller paintjobs, all the main points were there.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Take a look at patio furniture that is a couple years old, that has been in the elements. It has the same type of finish. It will look horribly cloudy and will come off on your hands when you touch it. Cool idea, but if spraying the product is what is holding you back from buying real automotive paint. Then buy some cheap single stage and roll it on. I already sell automotive primers that roll on really well. As long as it's not a metallic it will turn out close to that.

So a single stage solvent based enamel isn't going to hold up? I thought this stuff was implement paint and supposed to be really tough?

Only time will tell, I have read( I think all 160 pages or so ) of moparts forum and I never read about anyone having any issues with the paint holding up.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

good luck with that - yes I spray for a living and no I would never touch a car that was rolled - pray you never try to get real automotive paint to adhere to that, primer sealer anyting. paint like that will leave a chemical impression in the layers under it so if you ever want to do the car right you'll be stripping it to bare metal.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Ok I don't mean to hijack this thread but I've read about these roll on and tremclad jobs and from what I understood the stuff is self etching and tough as nails. My car is a 1991 and has the notorious crap primer issue so the paint is peeling off in quick order. I was wanting to get the car stripped down to metal and sprayed with this implament enamel but if it's not going to hold up I would really like to know.

Nothing is tough unless it has a catalyst. Even automotive paint. Without a hardner you have no chip protection, no flexibility, and no guaruntee.

Quoted for emphasis. I too have read the entire moparts thread, and everyone except the guy from California loved it, and he loved it once he got different paint and let it dry longer. I'd do it if I hadn't fallen in love with my stock Dark Red Metallic.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

For anyone looking to do this I can only say I hope you've seen one in person.
It will change your mind on the spot.
I like how most of the threads only have pics of a PART of the car, and the ones that show the whole car spent a month painting and watching paint dry only to repeat the process 10 more times. I seriously can't believe this crap is catching on.
For a hundred bucks you can spray it and have the durability you need.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Yes, but you're forgetting that for spraying you'll need a gun, a compressor, and a painting area so you don't get overspray everywhere. With a roll-job, the cost of rollers and brushes is grand total $20, plus sandpaper. $100 will do the roller job on the whole car, while as $100 with a spray will just do the paint, assuming you have the gun, the compressor, sandpaper, etc.

Why are you so against this? It's not your car. Let 'em do what they want. If it works for them and they like it, that's their problem, isn't it?

CYARS92, 69chargeryeehaw painted his car orange in less than a week. They don't all "spend a month watching paint dry" to get decent results. If you can find a rustoleum/tremclad color you like, and choose to paint your car with it, more power to you.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Automotive quality paint can be rolled on as well. And with a hardner in it, it will be a far superior product. Just depends on how long you want something to last. Or buy a 15 dollar throw away gun from a "Harbor Freight" type place. Rustoleum designed for lawn furniture wasn't really made for 50mph rocks and bugs hitting it. Especially on a fiberglass front end that needs to be flexible, with a flexible coating on it.

Here's a picture of a black miata during polishing, painted with rolled on industrial rust paint. Also, since it's "softer" paint, wouldn't that techinically make it more resistant to spiderwebbing on the front spoiler and the like?

The point is, it renders the car worthless to anyone other than the person who did it. Who in their sane mind is going to buy a car with paint thats thicker than a nickel?
He asked for opinions, some of us aren't afraid to give honest ones.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Some of you guys really have to lighten up. It's not your car he painted, it's HIS car he painted. If he wants to paint HIS car with asphalt undercoating, he can do it because it's HIS car. I've actually never heard of this process and I am amazed at how good it looks. Single stage sprayed auto paint is fine if you have all the equipment, a place to do it and the skill to do it. I've seen a few sprayed on paint jobs that looked like they were rolled. As for UV protection, most waxes and polishes have UV protection built in. I'm sure GeeJenn is going to keep wax on his car as most of us do. Power to ya GeeJenn91RSV8. I like it.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

This way of painting has been on the web for a few years, mostly on mopar.com and Hot Rod magazine just shows how to do it 2 monthes ago.

I did my '89 this way too, just have to wet sand and polish to be done, and just the paint ran $17, which is cheaper than even Maaco could paint it.

I'm amazed someone posts "lighten up, it's HIS car" everytime ANYONE says something negative in a post. Yes, every single person that has read this thread is aware that he didn't drive to a random house and paint someone else's car. He posted on a public forum asking what people think of it and they are responding. Any more stupid comments?

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

i know a guy that had a ragged out regular *** neon. Body kit tons of primer and bondo. he sprayed on some paint... we think it was house paint lol it flaked thick like house paint.

I think everyone is hating on the wrong point.

Rolling paint seems like a fine process especially since the learning curve is way less than spraying ie gun control and set up.

Wat maybe should be questioned is the paint being used but in the end how many ppl actually buy a thirdgen with decnt lookin paint and say well damn i wanna paint that. If it looks good no one will NEED to touch it.

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

I have also read that thread on moparts and i am going to try to do it myself if my parents are able to fix their camaro so they can give it to me. I think its worth a shot if u are willing to try it. Worst comes to worst u have to take it all off and start over again, and it IS NOT THICK! if you read that thread on moparts they say the thinner the better it is transparent untill you get to the fourth coat!

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

seems like a dumb idea to me, even if it comes out great its not designed for an automobile, you dont see any car plant machines with a bunch of roller covers and gallon cans painting the cars do you ?

Re: Rolled on paint job....Check it out !!

Do you think Henry Ford or Karl Benz sat down with their air compressor, spray primer, single stage automotive paint, and their Harbor Freight HVLP gun to paint their cars? Hell no. It was rolled on.

Edit:
Also, which do you think is faster to do? Spray, or roll? Seeing as how the better roller jobs on moparts take at least a week (for the paint to dry, multiple coats, and wetsanding) if not longer, and a deluxe paint job takes less than a day or two's worth of painting, you decide.

What about the $20,000 paint booth, $1600 air compressor, $250 gun, and other materials needed?

He did a cheap paint job on a cheap car, and it came out pretty good. I'll probably do the same thing to my plow truck.

BTW single stage enamel doesn't last very long either.

I love the theory that since the paint is crap and wont last, it will be incredibly hard to remove... who comes up with this ****
