Opinions, Comments or Help!!

Starting on body work and paint and need some opinions. My 89 IROC is in very good condition as far as body, with very little rust. As for the WB paint applied in CA, it,s trash. I was thinking about repainting in factory bright red (81), or maybe Dupont Hugger Orange. I have been thinking about masking off the back of the door, along the area where the weather seal installs. This would hide any seam if there is one after painting. Trying to avoid taking apart both doors, save time and a little cash. Not to mention the factory paint behind the door panel to the edge of the weather seal looks great. Would this be a good option, or would you go ahead and take both doors apart??

Thanks

if your going to do it, dont half *** it. you will not save any money not painting it because it is very little amount of paint there. as for work ya it is a little more time spent in having to tape it off, and some time to scuff up the doors however it would look better especially if you plan on changing the color. also by painting all of it, it the paint starts to peel up it till be far enough back to where you cant see it. it really depends on what you want to do and the quality that you want. but think about this when spending a ton of time doing prep work, that extra hour or two is nothing. what makes for really nice cars are taking that extra few steps.

just my

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

That's my basic assumption, do it right the first time. I was looking to see if anyone had taped off the door, with out taking it apart. It's not really a big deal to take it apart, I may do them last. Right now I'm involved in taken everything off the front end to paint. Allot of work for one person, guess that's why It's taking so long. I still have the K-Member to go on the front before I can start. But thanks for your input!! I saw on member who painted his engine bay, then did the door jambs, then paint. This probably the route I will take with mine..

What about the back deck? Do you take the body pannel off the glass or tape it off??

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

that really depends. how well does the back hatch line up. from years of the support shocks pushing down on the deck lid, some times it can walk and be out of alignment, and in that case you are better off taking it apart. if its not off you can leave it on, and tape it off. personally i would take it off. its only on there with 8 bolts, and that buteryl or some thing like that. its just really sticky ****. take the nuts off, heat up with a heat gun and wiggle, comes apart pretty easy. paint and fix any rust under it and put back together

Thanks, I will just make plans to take everything apart. Thinking that would produce the best overall job. This will be my first, done body work and things like that before. But never went it to doing the painting myself, at this time don't have the 5 or allot more to have it done..I'm up for the challenge anyway.. Thanks

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

take your time, im not a body guy by any means, but you would be suprised what you can do if you take your time. hell my car was hit by a semi and i brought it back to its original beauty, well almost i did cut the roof off of the car and make it a t-top car in the process but ill tell you what the three months that i spent on it really paid off. like i said before take your timeand ask alot of questions. don't rush putting the paint on, that is the easy part. painting is easy, its the prep work that sucks. get the prep work done well and the paint will look great even if you paint it yourself, after painting mine i feel that you have to be a bit off a **** up to **** it up!

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

Thankfully mine does not have any major damage, 2 dings from rocks, and scratches in the paint. I been using this cleaning disk from Eastwood, that takes it off like nothing. Going to go all the way down and use a PPG or Dupont epoxy primmer. Then go from there...I can see from the photo, you have yourself a little project to. Here is another forum I have been looking at, if you don't have it. Very good info on a little of everything..

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

my project is almost done, im finally putting it together. as far as primer you might want to try 2k primer like this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ULTIM...QQcmdZViewItem

its a high build and the nice thing about it is that it changes colors then you sand it. when it drys it is almost yellow, and when you block it down it turns a cream color really helps you find you highs and lows. another thing that i could recomend is getting a aresol guide coat that help find dings to. when i did mine i did it a panel at a time. i took the whole car down to bare metal and put a rattle can primer on it, did my fill work, would recomend evercoat light weight body filler, then primed the whole car all at once. i blocked it down and touched up a few spots with bondo, sprayed and blocked again, then painted. it only took a few hours to paint the car, but it took a couple of weeks to do the body work. have fun and rember to take your time, and walk away when you get frustrated. you get it done one day and have a bad *** third gen to drive. there will come a time when you say is it worth it, but when it is done you will be glad that you did it. you will also have the satisfaction of saying that you did it. Good luck

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

I think mine may have a little more damage than, first thought. I was trying to get the passenger fender aligned a little better, it's out maybe an 1/8 inch top to bottom. I was cleaning some of the seam sealer of the passenger hood hinge, and found this crack. So far no other damage or signs of welding. Does the area behind your passenger side hood hinge have a recede area or a bulge?? Pic included
Thanks

Re: Opinions, Comments or Help!!

that looks fairly close to stock minus the holes. that weld that is there is where the factory A pilars actually start to be welded to the front. the hole shouldn't be there, posibly rusted ot or just ****ed up from the factory but no big dal. weld them up of just fill them. it is not structural at that point so i wouldn't worry to much about it. and yes it does raise up a tad bit. dont worry about it.

you may think that it is cracked but in reality that is where the whole front of the car comes together from the factory. the A pilars/ fender support, cowl piece/ frame all meet at that piont so it may look a little bit jagged off but its not. hope this helps any questiond just ask. i just got home from the bar so im not realy making sence to myself at the moment

Opinions:

Pick some different colors. (But this is just personal preference)
As for cutting corners, if you can afford not to cut corners you will be happier in the long run.
I have skipped painting door jams on some cars and done them on others, and was always much happier with the ones where I did all the cut-ins.

I am not one of those people that say perfection or nothing. Honestly I stand more in the middle, understanding that sometimes we just want to have fun, and we don’t need things to be perfect to do that.
I also understand that pushing yourself to go above and beyond in your attempt at making something as perfect as you can do is an experience you should try to have at least once.

In the end, you have to make the choice.

Beyond that, the only thing you have to do is to post many progress pictures on this site.

Good Luck
