if thats from the engine compartment, there its not really decypherable, it more for the factory than the consumer. if you have the rpo codes, which are usually found on the center console(make sure its the correct vin), there are in alphabetical order and should list Z28 as an option

Grab the RPO decoder from here and put in all the codes from the console.

Re: Do i have a Z28? (Trim Plate Info)

The car can only be a Sport Coupe or a Z28. It can't be both models. It is probably a Sport Coupe. Surefire way to tell would be by looking at the RPO codes like the others said. Or if you have the build sheet it will tell you. You could also tell appearance wise if it is a Z, as long as it hasn't been altered. Does the car have any Z-28 badges, or does it have ground effects?

Nope, not badging at all and no ground effects. I guess it is pretty foolish of me to have thought it might have been a Z28. Even the Dash only says "Camaro" and that's it.

You never know, these cars have been around for a while and someone could have changed the apperance. But yeah I would bet it is a Sport Coupe. Still a Camaro though

So, Then, Berlinetta would be the Base Model and Z28 would be the Top Model with Sport Coupe falling somewhere in between?

In every year at least that I'm aware of the sport coupe was the base and this was before I was buying or following cars but I'm thinking they marketed the berlinetta as a luxury Camaro and the Z28 as the performance model. So I guess you could maybe say back then the berlinetta and Z28 were marketed as being somewhat equal but different Camaros as they both had different options that were not available on the other model and if you compare base prices if the berlinetta and Z28 had the same engine they were very close with the berlinetta sometimes costing more. But to answer your question the sport coupe was always the base or entry level camaro.

Re: Do i have a Z28? (Trim Plate Info)

Well, that's good news. That means that i can hack it up and modify it how i want to without destroying a classic trim package. I'll feel better about ripping out that tired old 305 and dropping in a pavement shredding 383! Maybe i'll even tub it out. Who knows? One thing that i couldn't ever truly understand is why a 4 Cylinder was actually ever an option. That HAD to be REALLY underpowered. Can you imagine a Corvette with a Four Banger? I can, however, see why it would be a good idea to restore one that is a 4-cyclinder because i can see those being rare.

Re: Do i have a Z28? (Trim Plate Info)

Holy cow guys!!! Do some research before throwing around information. The Sport Coupe is the base model and the Berlinetta was a Luxury edition of the Sport Coupe. The Z28 was the performance model. Also, 1982 cars did not have RPO stickers in the glove box. The tag under the hood will have Z28 on it if the car is a Z28. The Berlinetta never took the place of the base car.

Oh, the Corvette never had a 4 banger. The only vette to get that engine was the Chevette!!

Thank you Scott none of this info is hard to find either, it's right here on the home page under tech data, I'm not claiming to be an expert either I just know where to find the answers.
