Factory Fiberglass Hood 3rd Gen

I never knew GM made a 3rd generation factory fiberglass hood. It looks like the Iroc steel hood with the louvers but in the back of the lourved area is a working fresh air inlet. I just bought the piece and would like to know what other factory parts went with this hood. A fresh air induction system is always a nice edition to any car. TIA.

I may be wrong, but I thought it was only 82 & 83, nonetheless, they are out there. Interestingly early 1982 Firebird Trans Am's had an optional Aluminum hood. GM was definitely playing with lightening the cars.

Correct.

84 Got a Steel hood that looked the same, but had non-operational flaps.

IIRC, they were discontinued because they had issues with them separating at speed.

Not fibreglass! SMC or sheet molded compound, not sure the exact material though but the originals are not 'glass. My 82 Z has this and with the LG4 non functional " scoops".

Re: Factory Fiberglass Hood 3rd Gen

I always assumed that it was Fiberglas, as that is what most people have been calling it. I kind of remember looking at ones in the junkyard it reminded me of the ground effects pieces used on the 82-92 Camaro. One had delaminated and I peaked at it, I did not study it however.

Had one on my 85 race car. Swapped it for a lightweight pin on hood. Guy I sold it to never mounted it and it is back up for sale in southern Ontario.

Re: Factory Fiberglass Hood 3rd Gen

They have different insulation on the inside. Not the black fuzzy stuff on the metal hoods but a quilted looking stuff with what looks like aluminum foil laminated to it. It also has a ground wire set up on it. Or at least mine does.

I have to do a small repair on the hood that I have. The very tip of the hood, right by the base of the windsheild and the fender is broken off. Is bondo better to use for repairing this broken piece of the hood or is fiberglass better to use in the repair?

Thanks to the forum members once again for all of the information and help on the hood.

The ground wire is probably to... well... ground the hood. I could potentially see where the metal insulation piece attached to a fiberglass hood that was ungrounded, could create a static electrical condition... Get a little gas leak under the hood, the static releases a charge... KABOOM... Its just a theory, but it would make sense. Or every time you open your hood you could get a shock if you touched the metal piece...

Just a thought.
